Thank you Harley guy

Entoptic

Red Power!
I got into work today and my manager had something on his mind. I asked him what was up and he showed me the video of a Harley rider casually splitting the dotted white line. The rider then proceed to lean over and smack his side view mirror and give him a barf salute for no reason at all.

I've seen this done a few times by larger bikes but never from the angles he caught it with. Tesla's have a lot of cameras on them and the rider is caught red handed, without a license plate.....

Anyone seen this guy before? Located southbound on the 880 by Union City/Hayward area.

How about your manager lifts a finger, takes his spaceship off Autopilot (just the Autosteer is enough actually), and moves over a bit in the lane?

I understand your point of view, but honestly cars are not required to move to let motorcycle pass, as long as they don't obstruct our way it should be fine. Even though on video looks like rider had a ton of space to go, even without adjusting his trajectory.

Things like that are usually make all of us look bad. I doubt driver would be talking about rider who was showed him debris on road, or warn about something upfront.

We should only lanesplit if safe to do so.

If we are co-operative, people tend to watch out for us. Smack mirrors and act like a douchebag and people will hate us more.

It's hard to tell how much space he had based on that repeater camera. I agree punching a mirror is not the way to go, but assuming OP's manager saw the motorcyclist coming up behind him, he is a douche for not moving over. Most Tesla drivers are really nice, but I run into ones that can obviously see me and don't leave room because they are too important to disable autosteer for a few seconds to let me pass. A few inches is usually enough.

The rider in the second video was riding a Victory Cross Country not a Harley. I guess that proves anybody can act like a douchnozzel. :laughing

he didn't even punch the mirror. He folded the mirror (backwards.) At least that's how it looks like.

yeah, he should not do that.

but ... anyway whatever.
This is not one of the biggest things out there...

honestly, any roadrager in a car is a bigger danger to even drivers in cars, so..

because he is not required by law to do so, rider had no place in doing what he did:cool

Fat ass on motorcycle is right on the dotted line his arm is extended some when he hits the mirror. That bike is pretty large but there was plenty of space. Just seems like an entitled fat ass on a cruiser

I've been splitting lanes for over 30 year and it never occurred to me that cars are supposed to move over for us. Similarly I don't think that holding a helmet in my hand gives me front of the line privileges at the grocery store, fast food restaurant, or gas station.

This type of behavior and attitude is going to inspire non-riders to take steps to restrict / remove our ability to continue to lane share.

+1. Staying to the left side of the #1 lane is part of using lane #1 in traffic in California. You can see the rider has to slow as he approaches manager's Tesla, because of the reduced clearance in the split. His either lack of observance of the motorcycle approaching from the rear, or intentional refusal to steer left to create more space (you can see he's positioned in the lane center) is possibly a CVC 22400a violation.

The rider shouldn't touch the Tesla- that's illegal and wrong in and of itself- but the inconsiderate lane position of the Tesla is also wrong in and of itself. Neither wrong makes a right. Agreed that mirror-touching incidents like this one I captured the other day don't improve P.R. around lane splitting.

Maybe he thought it was a buddy of his.
I commute to SF and often see a friend of mine and smack his mirror and we both laugh.
OK, no. Just a thought.

Sharing the lane is common courtesy, IMO.

Uhhhhh no. While I understand the frustration with clueless/discourteous drivers, what is depicted in the video is not a violation of 22400

So we finally have a technology that keeps cars perfectly centred on the lane and without sudden, jerky moves, and people are still complaining? Whaaaa?!?!

In other countries, drivers are more courteous of lanesharing riders in stuck traffic , that's true. They frequently move over.

A lanesharing rider only makes one less driver stuck in the same traffic.

If you can't fit between cars centered in their lane, don't split. Or buy a narrower fucking bike.

Reminds me of a senior member on here bitching about cars not moving over for him on FB. I told him he sounded like an entitled noob and his response was, "well my bike is wide!" :nchantr

This. It's nice when car drivers make room, but it's far from necessary, or even an expected courtesy. Wait a couple of seconds, and it almost always opens up.

As a year round rider, this time of year I get chills watching some of the grossly stupid splitting practices on Bay Area highways when the fair weather riders come out.

OK , yeah I agree. Person should buy a Ninja if it's a problem. Like the 650, or smaller, Ninjas, for lane-sharing.
