i heard Macau is heaven for gambling addicts. anything like Las Vegas?

No. Aside from the names and maybe the exterior of few casinos they are nothing alike. These days Vegas hotels are more like multi venue entertainment centers. Clubs, beach clubs, shopping centers, music halls. The casinos in Macau cater strictly to gambling, specifically taking the cold cash from Mainlanders.

Macau is trying to get away from just being a gambling draw. They're not allowed to advertise gambling directly, so in recent years all the casinos are trying to outdo one another on the entertainment/attraction front. The Chinese government has started cracking down on all the Chinese millionaires/billionaires who have used Macau to launder money for decades. As such, the revenue streams need to adjust, much like Vegas did.

My company did a project at the new MGM on the Cotai side of Macau that has all the newer hotels who are trying to shift away from gambling, or at least augment the revenue.

Macau is the gambling capital of the world, making far more money than Vegas or anywhere else. And, as agent said, it's all mainlanders, due to the growing Chinese middle class.

I've heard anecdotally from a tour guide while in Malaysia that the entire region surrounding China is getting tired of their shit.

I hear it is like the American tourist used to be, loud and unaware of decorum outside the US.

I have witnessed some stupid tourist shenanigans in Jordan and Iceland. One guy walked right up to the edge of a geyser.

They've also been known for defecating and urinating in public in Hong Kong.

that plus the 'fake' islands they made and mineral/oil claims they make in their neighbor's territorial waters.

vietnam, PI, malaysia are not happy.

Would it be worth it to get visas for the mainland to do a day of bargain hunting in Shenzhen?

hell no.

you have to get visa before you leave the US IIRC.

not cheap either.

They have arrival visas now. But, I'd not suggest going to the mainland unless you're spending a few weeks in HK.

Edit: according to this you can't, but Ive heard they have extended the arrival visas from 24 hours a couple years ago, to a week or 3 days now. I've even seen the arrival visas desk in Shanghai and maybe Beijing.

I’m sure with my line of work I’ll see the mainland eventually. They have some interesting new ideas in inverter technology coming out of there recently.

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, Season 11, Episode 5 on Hong Kong--just finished watching it.

There's nothing that I have ever seen on TV about Hong Kong that would compel me to want to go there. It looks depressing.
Known for its cuisine; there is so much you can eat.

OP, why do you want to visit Hong Kong?
