big negative on that (well depends on your level of "hot". Been there many times, and it's pretty bad there. Best ones I have ever seen are tourist from Japan and Korea.

Seriously it's pretty bad for that kind of scene.

Tagging with others said, watch out for PICK POCKETS! Scams, galore for non locals. Punks that want to fight, fight in groups. You "May" think you can take on one to three but watch out for five plus with butcher knives.

Mainland Chinese (from China) are hated there (FYI). HK people speak Cantonese and NOT Mandarin

Well then screw HK, go to Vancouver instead

I don’t anticipate any problems either. I’m a 6’2” dude that doesn’t go looking for any trouble.

My family is from HK, and i've been there both as a kid and as an adult with my kid.

It's a great place, but super crowded. Travel by MTR, but be prepared to do a lot of walking as well. Lot's of hills too. I never felt unsafe or needed to 'be on guard' Big difference from when I was in Paris. That place is way worse.

Food and shopping malls are everywhere. The city has so much to see and do.

I recommend getting an airbnb as hotel rooms are really small. We got a 2 bedroom flat by Causeway bay, and having laundry/kitchen and walking distance to the MTR was awesome.

[edit] check out this cool little MC shop I saw when I was walking around. Dude was just ripping around in this 2t.

+1 to all of that. I’m no expert, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

perhaps it is because you are a dude. my experience has been the inverse. have walked for miles alone at night in paris on numerous trips - totally unmolested. my first trip to hong kong, went for a late night walk along the water taking pics of the awesome light show on the buildings, and had to wriggle free of an agreesive stalker. i was more observant and circumspect on subsequent trips there.

My old company has a office in Hong Kong, so I would visit from time to time.

I enjoy HK way more than Shanghai, which I spend a lot of time in.

Go to bars and restaurants and ride the escalator in the SoHo - western identity of HK

Ride the cable car or Hike up Victoria Peak
See the Big Buddha
Go to Tai O fishing village
Go to the Defense Museum
Use Open Rice to find the best Indian food
Shop!
Hike Draggons Back to Big Wave Beach
Watch the laser light show every night from the Kowloon
Best Subway in the world- Get a Octopus card - you can use it at fast food and vending

that cable car thing is F-ed up. LONG lines and I rather not wait in line with tour groups of mainlanders.

we ended up taking a cab up. I believe a bus is possible as well. We hiked down the paved trails back to the cable car station and onwards.

don't even think about it in the summer!

Tai o is very cool.

Also ocean beach park if you have kids and want to do some touristy stuff. The park is split in 2 seconds on the mountain, and you need to take a gondola between them. The views between the 2 sections is spectacular!

I go to hk a few times every year. My gf, now wife lives there. Mike had a long list thats hard to add to so here's my 0.02.

Hit Ozone at dusk. Best view.
Hit other rooftop bars.
Go hiking in sai kung.
Hike Tai O
Hike around Lamma and end the day at THE seafood restaurant.
Dont bother with macau. Its ruined.
Pack a picnic at go to Tamar Park.
Explore chiu chow food
Dont bother with lan kwai fong.
Explore "local diners"
Go to HKU and find the trail behind HKU and hike that to the Peak.
Take taxis. Super cheap.
Nov/Dec is good time to go. Bring a sweater.
Plus 1 on causeway bay. Thats where i hang.
Explore szechuan at restaurant on macdonnel road. Im too lazy to google.

Visited in 2017, first Asian trip. First thought, without speaking the language you should travel with someone who can speak Cantonese or Mandarin. I was told everyone spoke English and it wasn't the case, and many who did speak were bashful to try and talk to a big fat American.

Visit every arcade that's still in business but don't expect vintage games. All vidya games are large "experience" things like Taiko drumming, DDR, etc. Was disappointed for no vintage Pacman.

Food is awesome and cheap especially on the street. Can get pricey when it gets indoors.

Loved the Blade Runner vibe of the streets there. The mass transit is excellent and maybe too big/accessible.

Go to Macau at the same time, which also doesn't need a Chinese visa and is a short jet-boat ride away. The church ruins in Macau were really cool with a free crypt to check out after eating cheap street meat stew.

Don't expect to buy any luxury goods they are all cheaper here in the States and easier to find American sizing.

Was a fabulous experience.

Re: Street violence

I have never felt safer in a big city. Felt much safer than any big city in America. Would definitely hold onto my wallet in a secure place though as you will not be ready for the rush of people and lack of personal space.

Additional...Go to the shit USA spots in HK/Macau and you'll be surprised. 7-11 is a whole other world there. There is 1 homeless person in downtown HK, seriously it will blow your mind. And go to the public toilets in the town center to experience the hole in the ground, must be seen once but don't drop ANYTHING :)

Only thing worth going to Macau for is the Grand Prix, which is 11/15-11/18 this year.

I spent spent several weeks in Macau last year and I'll be happy to never go again.
