SupermotoUSA 2019 - Round 1 - Sonoma 4/19 & 4/20

Air Cooled
Race Day - Reccomendations

So my buddy is all gung-ho for doing this, just want to make sure about what we're getting into and that we won't be completely out of place.

I'd be on a street-legal WR250X-SM, he on a street-legal DRZ-400SM. I'm a mid-pack AFM novice, but have done only one supermoto trackday ever. He's close to as fast as me, but with lots more SM trackdays under his belt.

Are we going go be completely outclassed / rolling chicanes for everyone else? Does anyone care?

Are there licensing requirements? Do I need to prove I can even ride a motorcycle? Or is literally just show up morning-of, sign up, and hit the track?

Bike prep seems super basic. Water wetter, tape/remove lights and mirrors, remove side stand, and slap some numbers on the fenders. Easy enough. No belly pan, no safety wire, etc.

Classes (as if I haven't been bit in the ass by this before)!
Vet+35 - is this just for anyone over 35 years old? Fast guys only?
Open Novice? Open Beginner?
GP1 400 - looks like this is OK with 17" supermoto wheels.

How many races do you guys typically sign up for?

Anything else I'm missing?

- Sounds like you've got the basics in order. It's relatively laid back when it comes to getting you both on track. Most categories are Open, so you're instantly qualified. with even a minimal amount of track time you'll be fine. Each racing class (division) gets two races, a heat race and a main event. We will likely grid for the heat races by order of sign up, the main event line up order (grid) is based on heat race finish. Giving you added practice before the final. Most people seem to enter two classes. Typically we run 6 lap heat races and 8 lap main events. All sign ups etc. are done at the track, just the basic minimal bike prep needs to be done in advance. NUMBERS on the BIKE are important. We expect many new racers this season, the pace will reflect that.

I guess I need to make sure I register for the race as soon as I show up for practice Friday :rofl if heat grid is based on sign up order

This makes me wish I was still in the Bay area.
SM is sooooo fun.

Remember me Brok? I am the guy that highsided his poorly suspended XR650R at Stockton like 15 years ago at your SM school and woke up getting loaded into the ambulance. Haha, good times. That was a hell of a concussion.
I never did take you up on the makeup school day you offered.

Heads up from Brok:

Attention all attendees:
There is a car show Saturday and the raceway has requested ALL SUPERMOTO (motorcycle) people get in the LEFT LANE, when you get to the main gate. They will be collecting the $10. Pit pass / Admission for the races at the kart track. * any other lane will cost you more $

The pass is good for both days.

Thank you!

How was the racing/turnout? Looking forward to getting back to SM track days and racing but looks like I'm still a couple months away. This would of been a good one, bummed I could not make it.

I don't have a good baseline for what normal is, but it seemed pretty solid. Most classes had 8-10 riders, Open Amateur had 16. I had some great battles with other riders towards the back of the pack. If there is another Sonoma round I will definitely try and join. Might need to invest in some sticky tires and warmers, though.

Brok said that he was waiting to release the schedule based on how many people showed up to this, and that he thought turnout was pretty good.

None of the classes were big enough to require multiple heats, though.

I raced in the adult mini class with like 13 riders and got killed was fun though! I was thinking there would be more people but the turnout was pretty good. The smallest race was the GP mini races they had like 4 riders.

Turnout sounds about right for not having a dirt section but maybe a little low. Dirt brings out more racers.

One winner of one of the races just destroyed the competition he lapped like almost half the class, it was an amazing slaughter! The heat race was even more spectacular he crashed twice and still claimed #1

Highlight video that one of my buddies put together (#44x Mikael Sedlacek). Some great footage of the start of the GP1 race at 1:25, with another one of our friends #47 Lukas Satas battling for 3rd with #100 Michael Hale. I was bringing up the rear on the #89 WR250x... :laughing

Nice! I was on the #31 DRZ. My motor blew on the first lap of the main:(. It had started smoking and loosing power in practice and it sounded like shit when I'd pull off the track....I knew it wasn't good but was hoping it would last a few more laps! Still had a good time though:thumbup. I'm planning on getting back out there with my 2018 KTM 350xcf after I get the supermoto set up for it.:teeth
