I own 3 pairs of Maui Jim Dive Deep

• Made in Italy
• Limited Edition
• NLA
• Polarized lenses
• They aren’t inexpensive
• Much higher quality than typical Maui Jims

Why do I own 3 pairs? Same reason why the Space Shuttle had 3 on-board computers.

Back in the day when they weren’t cheaply made, I only wore Ray Ban Baloramas (introduced in 1967):

Hobie's were out b4 Maui Jims, Varnets before that, now it is brown lens Wayfarers. All glass & polarized, I find brown lens over green more sharper, but not as relaxing.
My years with Hobie had me buying on sale glasses from Big 5 that were the same size & shape to swap lenses. Those nylon frames will not stand up to sun exposure over time and will snap.
This supply has dropped, so I went with wayfarers, more expensive, but not nylon and they last.

I like the Oakley Gascan sunglasses. Fits me well and if you accidentally sit on it. Arms snap right back in place. No sun glare from the sides.

I find the blind spot annoying from glasses with large rims like that. Can’t see well when looking over my shoulder while riding.

We’re talking sunglasses, stuff we can do without. No one is being forced to spend anymore than the cost of $40 gas station glasses.
We all buy crap from China without much complaint of the evils behind that.

I used to live on like $20 gas station rack sunglasses. I'd lose a couple of pairs a year or mess them up, no big deal.

Maybe 10 years ago I splurged on a pair of Oakleys (Flakjacket XL) and I'm still using the same frame to this day. I've gone through maybe 4 sets of lenses since.

We were getting ready for a riding trip to Utah, I think.

On the way out, I needed some sunglasses and, naturally, went to the grocery store to pick some out.

We made it to Victorville, where we stopped for gas. Somehow, between the pump and the mini-mart, those glasses vanished.

And I had to buy a new pair in the mini-mart.

One time at the Wall someone stole my Serengeti glasses off the seat of my bike. I’d always leave them hooked under the passenger strap while standing around shooting the breeze.

Cheap sunglasses are like cheap shoes: pay now or pay later. Optical quality is more than just visual clarity. Low quality lenses mean more compensation by your eyeballs.

But as far as visual clarity goes, try looking through any of the Chinese binoculars and then look through something such as a Leica pair. I have found the same thing to be true with good vs cheap sunglasses.
Just be glad you aren’t buying Rx pair. My last pair of Oakley and current pair of Maui Jims progressives cost $850. But just like shoes and feet, I don’t short change my eyes.

I mean, how hard is it to take care of your shit? People carry around $1,000 phones.

I can still use my $50 phone if it gets scratched to hell and back. One good mark on the sunglasses and they're garbage.

I should have mentioned that I am brutal on shoes. That doesn’t stop me from buying quality ones though. But I guess since I only wear shoes to the gym, it is of less consequence.
On the other hand, we get 350 days of sunshine a year. Brutal desert sunshine.

On the other hand, we get 350 days of sunshine a year. Brutal desert sunshine.

Years ago I read an article that claimed Seattle was the #1 city in the US for sunglass sales due to the weather.
If it's sunny all the time you always need shades and tend to have them nearby most of the time while in places like Seattle you don't need them as often but when it rains and then the sun shines it's blinding so you go pick up a cheap pair of sunnies to deal with it.
then it rains for another week and you lose/misplace them and need to buy more the next sunny day.

Never looked into it to verify but it makes a cool conversation killer.

I’ve got two pairs of Maui Jim’s that I’ve been using regularly for over five years. Not a scratch on the lenses, glass is pretty durable. However your cheap plastic lenses ain’t gonna go the distance.

Actually at work I use tinted plastic safety glasses which cost maybe $2 each. They scratch just looking at them but free to me so who cares.

When I was visiting the USA I noticed some weird thing happening to the plastic on the inside nose piece of my glasses. Optometrist sent them back to MJ and they made and shipped me a new pair. The old pair was 1 1/2 years old and not a scratch on either lens. Of course they arrived back in Washington 2 days after I flew back to Mexico.

Interesting concept on the Seattle sunglass thing.
