How do we know he's frugal? What we have now is a frugal skilled carpenter
Time for some reading. Guns, Germs and Steel attempted to explain the new non-racist thinking about why the Euros have been successful.
According to OP's account, it isn't his case.In my experience, most of the guys who hire laborers and "handy men" instead of real tradesmen are middle-aged slumlords who own a few rental units and seek to "improve" them as cheaply as possible (because they don't live in them, and therefore couldn't care less about the quality of work).
In other words, very few techbro's.
I know Mark, he's been to my house, etc.How do we know he's frugal?
My thoughts on Guns, Germs, and Steel. FUCK THAT BOOK.
My reasoning: Roughly 50% of my professors at UCSB figuratively sucked Diamonds dick. So nearly every course had some bit about it, how great it is, and to read it again.
It just got old hearing about how great he is and his book BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Otherwise, brilliant man.
As for OP, I think that high tech is one of the lesser places to rail against white domination. I think more about hedge funds and corporate boards and stuff. Old money, right school, right-club stuff. Pissin against the redwoods, retiring from office to become a predatory hedger. I think that's the old bison hunters there. Tech has a diversity in terms of who has the types of skills necessary and it's pretty much a magnet for the planet of talented people. I don't think non-Caucasians get turned away at the door if they have the brains and willingness.... In some other places, people can't even get to the right door to knock on, I would imagine.
:laughing Awesome! Abrasive, alright.
Gunpowder was invented by the Chinese while they were searching for the elixir of immortality. :x
I'm pretty sure he had a followup but I haven't
It doesn't invalidate his points. But yeah, people were eager to jump on it and ride it because it absolved the 400 year old Enlightenment argument that somehow, Europeans were innately superior to all the dark peoples of the world. In much of that interim, otherwise brilliant people reasoned as such. It offered a way to explain why other cultures seemed "stuck" at a certain level of ag, technology, etc etc. That thinking is the REAL basis of the term "racism" which gets thrown about and misused, because it includes a component of implied superiority.
Like I said, it will be challenged, revised, whatever, but it moved the argument forward by someone who bothered to do the calculus and propose something. Somebody had to explain how and why most of the world has basically settled on a Eurocentric science-based reality of daily living, wants and needs. Why this creation "won" and others didn't. Why we lived through colonial and imperialist times, how it got that way.
The follow-up was "Collapse", also very good.
He did a TED talk on it:

Hard to do with a smile, but it's really the best way to divest yourself of what's going to be a problem client anyway, without pissing them off enough to badmouth you to all the neighbors. :thumbup
