Should everyone own a 500 at some point?

when in doubt gas it
500 smoker? What are you thinking to use it for?

In Glamis sand or on big hills it would be a total hoot. Not sure where else I would want to ride it. The big hit is hard to control and very tiring. A ktm 300 is quite powerful and the 500's are over the top for me.

My choice is a 250 ktm smoker and 525exc dual sport. Both are quick and very ride-able

The big hit is very modify-able, with a little porting trick...very shallow and short trench (or groove) ground in the cylinder wall, leading up from the upper side of the exhaust port.

Function is so some air can escape and not get compressed at slow piston speeds, like kick starting and slow going in difficult places, like picking your way through boulders or fallen logs.

Want more bike speed when the going is better? twist the throttle, and engine speed = piston speed,
doesn't allow the fuel/air mix time to move in the trench,
so all the mid to top end is there, like it was before.

The bottom end is way way better, feels like a four stroke, better.

To find this perfect trench dimension ..Creep up on it, the only mistake is going too far.

1/16" deep, 3/8" long (up), would be a good starting point, and show what it does. Go 1/16th longer second trial see how much change that is...do you want more? Etc.
