Should everyone own a 500 at some point?

That's a $5000-$6000 bike all day long. Shit. Fuck. Seriously.

If that's a Service Honda AF it's worth twice what they're asking. Easily.

You're preaching to the choir. I just bought a non-aluminum 500 in August, pretty hard to justify another one so soon.

Anybody want to buy a 92 CR500? Fresh top end (Honda parts .25 over), carb just cleaned, fresh coolant and all hoses replaced, runs like a raped ape! Got a chain and rear sprocket for it, too!

Sure, why not? I bought a CR500, I promptly got rid of that and then I built and raced an XR600R back in 2008; I didn't break anything that season.. So I got rid of that too.

Then I eventually bought an YZ450F and I like it. It's a little hard to handle at a race pace and I know the first high-side is gonna be big, but at least it handles well.

So yea, everyone should see what it's like.. then you'll believe in good suspension and chassis.

Don't ride an CR500R with a sacked rear shock; any CL bike you get will have a sacked suspension.

I love my 300, it's a beast. I really want to ride a 500 just to see what it's like, after all the build up from everyone that rode them when they were new/common.

Browsing CL I see them for so relatively cheap it's so temping to just buy and try out. Then I started thinking about my baby boy (4 months old), and I had this flash vision of me and my friends sitting around in 20 years talking about this dirt bike from 40 years ago that was so wild it was indescribable, and my boy and his friends just rolling their eyes saying 'yeah right'. Therefore I feel it's my duty to buy one and keep it for 15 years and then throw him on it to keep the legend alive. Probably the most round about reason to buy a bike ever :laughing

Thoughts? :laughing

WTF LOL
CR's . They are shaped more like a 250 which makes them twitchy to ride. Better for MX but sucks for offroad. Get A KX500 For trail riding. There is a reason why they ruled baja for years and years. You can actually lug a kx like a 4 stroke when needed and the mega torque just keeps it going. Then when you want to hit hyperspace you just scoot up on the seat and nail it. The back tire starts spinning and doesnt stop till you have had enough. You will loop out a CR all the time in spots that a KX will just spin its way through. They have a much longer swing arm than the honda. Never got to ride the big KTM. First KX 500 was a 1987 when I was about 16 years old. After that I was hooked and upgraded to a 1990, then another '90 that was in better shape, then a '92, then a 2004.

A little :green biased but all true!
Only way to stay on/control a KX500 sometimes is LUG it like a Diesel and clutch it like a 125!
Add RPM to add wheelspin/chaos/puckerfactor as deemed neccesary... :laughing

I raced big bores for years...Maico's and Honda's. My favorite was the 86 cr500, awesome motor and great handling...when Honda went to inverted forks the handling went to shit...it was hard to hang on to any Honda 2 stroke in the 90's let alone a 500!
The modern 450's aren't as brutal as the 500's and because of the power characteristics they are easier to go fast on, that's why they replaced the 500's. I was racing a 250 2 stroke when the modern 450's came about. Up till 2004 I was still winning expert races against the 450's but it was hard. On the 2stroke you have to be perfect...throttle control, clutch slippage body english and gear shifts had to be spot on...with the 450 it was so much easier...I'm exaggerating here..but it's almost like "just twist the throttle to go faster"...didn't even matter what gear you were in :rolleyes.
I love the new 4 strokes now, but will always have an appreciation for the brutality of the old 500's... and the men who raced them!:teeth:cool

Spot-on. :thumbup

Went back and reread the entire thread. Didn't mean to turn it into a "which one is better" thread. Sorry everybody. The answer to the original question is...Yes, which ever flavor you prefer, everyone should own a open class two stroke at least once in their lives.:thumbup

I know we are hi-jacking this post but since were talking 2S vs 4S I had to post this vid.

Although we're, not surprisingly, witnessing a faster rider win on a lesser machine, that was super fun to watch. :thumbup

And neither of them hit the leap...pussies.

In the video description it says the 4t rider won the first Moto so the 2t rider had to win the second one to end up with the overall. Was fun to watch for sure. Was ringin that lil 125 by the neck!!

Besure to post followup and let us know when you're gonna be out at Hollister so's we can all take turns on it... :teeth

I backed out because he can not confirm it's a Service Honda, in fact he doesn't know what Service Honda is. I'd just got see for myself but he's 200+ miles from me.

Still worth a good amount if it's as clean as he says... go 25, settle around 3.

Think of it as a CR250 with nitrous! :rofl

Not everyone would have a good experience with the 500cc Class two strokes.
And..they went through changes in suspension and chassis geometry, so.. where they worked, was always changing.

Just like the bikes we have now...Hyper power, favors experienced hands & mind.

Totally appreciate the offer Rob. If he still has it next week when I head out that way I might check it out though.

Tired and Emotional
I have a 92 KTM 500 in bits in the garage. Complete with a replacement crank and rod after the original bottom end bearing seized (still have original crank too). All it needs is a piston (I have a source who had some fabricated) and tidying up and rebuilding.

I don't have the resources to do anything with it ATM. Anyone interested in a project ? PM me if you are.
