RIP Orchard Supply Hardware

What in the....:mad

The original OSH in San Ramon closed few years ago while the new one on Crow Canyon was built in the old Lucky's store space. It's nice and less than 2 years old, now gonna close? So lame! They carry many more small nuts, bolts, and springs than Home Depot.

Guess I'll be going to Ace in Alamo or Danville now, further of a drive too.

Alamo ACE is pretty awesome, except they don't stock grade 5 hardware. If I need a specific thing, I have to use grade 8, as the alternative is grade 3. Beyond that, I really enjoy their selection and stock level.

It's a bummer about OSH San Ramon. I did like the fastenener bins. But, ACE has better brass fittings.

Our local (Willow Glen) Ace is also closing. OSH is the closest hardware store to me, and branch was only remodeled a couple of years ago. I was pretty happy with the place overall.

I think that the OSH site will probably become part of Google's campus as they develop the new SJ hive.

OSH hasn't been old-skool OSH for quite some time. To be honest, I've walked in there, walked out and ended up going to Home Depot more than a couple times. Too bad.

And if you really need serious hardware, ya just gotta get it from McMaster-Carr, et al cuz you're simply not going to find it at Ace, HD, Lowes, etc.

Sucks a local icon is going away, tho.

OSH, Sears, Toys-R-Us. Victims of poor management and short term thinking.

I've been going to various OSH stores for 20+ years. They have a great selection of fasteners and odd ball hardware. Plus Carhartt and Dickies fashion wear. I've always wondered how they stayed in business because almost every time I'm in there, there aren't many shoppers. I'll miss them.

When we moved to Cupertino in 1962 my Dad discovered the old Orchard Supply Hardware store (not called OSH then) on West San Carlos. It was amazing, my Dad visited often bringing us kids along. It was like going to a museum or something, there were things there that nobody else had.

My Dad would explain the use of various farm implements and other tools they had as well as some blacksmithing tools.

The company morphed into a franchise and lost most of what made Orchard Supply unique and special. Still sad to see it all go away.

The best thing about OSH is that you could easily get help. You couldn't walk from one end of the store to the other without getting multiple offers for assistance.

Big box stores, on the other hand, good luck with that:

You must have had fantastic OSH stores in the Bay Area. The only one I ever went to in Sacramento was terrible. They were more concerned with selling cheap plastic pool toys and crappy patio furniture than fasteners or rakes or anything useful. I never found helpful staff. Everyone appeared overworked and never had time to answer questions. Haven't set foot in an OSH for probably ten years.

Bummer that so many of you had a good retail experience and are losing that option.

Problem I've had with Ace is that there is such a thing as too helpful. Sometimes, I just want to browse and look for inspiration. I don't need someone to run around and fetch a laundry list of shit. I've been pestered to the point that I simply walked out of the store and this has happened probably a half dozen times. It's like they are trained to not take no for an answer. Appreciate it, bruh, but I am not obligated to explain to you, in great detail, what I'm trying to do.

Sometimes I actually enjoy the complete and utter lack of help from the H-D/Lowe's crew. Just leave me the hell alone and let me shop.

The people who need to GTFO of those places are the asswipe solar panel salesmen. I've had to get rude with them to make them back off.

Not as fast as I look.
Oh, this just sucks. They closed one near me, but the other stayed open. I will drive right passed the Home Depot to go to OSH. It has better prices and inventory than ACE. And it has tons of things Depot doesn't care about.

I virtually never ask for help, unless the store is too disorganized to find things, or there is something out of stock. My ACE is way too small. Virtually no gardening, for example.

Sears owned OSH for awhile.

Yeah, them too. Fuck those goddamn box stores. I hate them. You go in there and can't find anything. The employees are idiots. OSH at least had reasonably smart employees.

Until they didn't. :(

Our OSH used to be awesome until some years ago. Then they revamped the fastener section. Then veteran employees were replaced by know-nothings. Didn't know they got bought out, but it makes sense now.
