Per Castro Valley News there was an incident this evening with a dark (black/grey) sport bike and a red SUV which proved fatal.

RIP rider. :rip
sad ...
i'm trying to figure out how it happened.
bike was heading south on 880 from oakland, then east-bound on 580, exited on redwood, and headed north toward the high school.

the photo shows the bike down on the southwest corner of the csv blvd. intersection, yes? was he trying to make a u-turn at 100mph???

tragic, for sure,
ferenc
ps i heard a report that he had no working headlight (track bike, or???)

These people have no respect for the public or their safety. They should use traffic cameras and whatever footage is available to track all the vehicle involved down. The vehicle should be impounded, crushed quickly and put on public display.

ASTRO VALLEY -- A motorcyclist who sped out of Oakland died when he crashed into an SUV in Castro Valley, and investigators were looking into whether he was involved in an earlier car rally known as a sideshow, authorities said Monday.

The motorcyclist, whose name wasn't immediately released, was briefly chased by a CHP officer on southbound Interstate 880 near 16th Avenue on Sunday evening.

The officer reported seeing the biker on his 2003 Suzuki GSX-R near a sideshow, said CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld, an agency spokesman. He said the officer stopped pursuing the motorcyclist because of safety concerns.

The motorcyclist was then spotted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter traveling at more than 100 mph with its lights off on eastbound Interstate 580 at 8:17 p.m. Sunday, said Officer Eric Thomas, another CHP spokesman.

The motorcyclist exited the freeway and began traveling north on Redwood Road. He slammed into a 1998 Ford Explorer at Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard and died at the scene, the CHP said.

I live near Redwood/Hwy 13 -- I could hear sideshows & racing ALL evening yesterday -- sorry to hear that one of them ended in a fatality.

I think it would be great if they put round-abouts all over Redwood and Pinehurst. It's a great road for bicyclists and Priuses, NOT a great road for riding 50+ mph on a motorcycle.
hmm, what would the roundabouts accomplish at the never-congested intersections? redwood is not a great road for bicycles - hardly a bike line - the road is too narrow. even when passing a bicyclist while on my motorcycle, i have to be extra careful - a prius would never make it! there are nice offroad bike trails - bicycles are too dangerous on bay area roads!

Is it possible to switch off the lights on a 2003 Gixxer?

In this Golden State:
After 1978, motorcycles must be equipped with at least 1 and not more than 2 head-lamps that turn on automatically when the engine is started and remain lighted while the engine is running.

i recall when my 'rectumfires' burnt up on my first bike, a '74 400f. i replaced them with high current 3-phase full bridge system and put on dual cat-eye type halogens ... and immediately getting pulled over one cold evening over on 24 ... no ticket, leo just wanted to check out the lights. i did not realize they were legal, at the time i made the mod :)
fools have all the luck, eh? it was good to be seen, even if by the leos ...

Am I understanding correctly that it's believed that the SUV in the collision was also involved in the sideshow?

That article is cumbersome to read.

What I gathered from other reports is the SUV was driven by someone going about their business on Castro Valley BLVD and had their evening ruined.

Older bikes like xl Hondas didn't seem to have the headlights working when they were stolen. Maybe this guy on the Gixxer stole it and that's why he ran. Or maybe he ran because sometimes young men on fast bikes run from the cops. Either way, he paid the price for being stupid.

The Prius drivers are much more careful around slower moving traffic than most swiddy motorcyclists. Nobody should be speeding on those roads -- and then they would be safe for everyone.
those roads are not wide enough for bipeds, cycles, AND cagers - legally there are very few places to pass those going under the posted limits.

i wish there were more non-cager roads in the bay area - safer for all! prius? lol - as an ama friend said about the prius - some people will do anything to get 50 mpg ;-)

have fun, but be safe,

when my charging system burnt out some 1000 miles from home, i rode with the headlight fuse in my pocket, just barely making it into a west nevada town before dark, with state troopers/cops camped at each end of the town :) - in nevada, you must have headlights, but, as in california cars, the headlights need not be on a half hour on each end of the night ;-) i wound up pushing the bike the last two blocks to the motel.

this tragic accident aside, i wonder if there is a helicopter detector method for solo riders?

i'm not up on americana - is this what you mean?
SWIDDY
A wormy or lipless arrogance. A smarmy, anxious verbosity. A statement offering no clarity designed to evade and avoid accountability at all cost. Most often employed and associated with small town politics. May be accompanied in many cases by severe ass sweat.

perspiration aside, motorcyclists i know are concise, clear, and quick with their intent, si? are prius drivers happy being left seemingly lost in their fog :) ?
