Rapid tire wear causes?

So I rode down to work yesterday to check on my car (lucky enough to be able to store it there). I too, 280 cuz its nicer. As I was poking around the car my gaze turned to my bike, as I it often does. I noticed the rear looked weird. A closer look revealed little bits of rubber stuck to the tire center line. something I'd expect if I'd skidded or peeled out.

The tire is near done anyway, but it seemed to have worn notably on that run. Checked my pressure at a gas station with a borrowed gause and it looks like mine is bad and I was 4 psi high in both tires 39 front 46 rear. Could high pressure have caused the tire to heat u and wear like that? I rode el Camino home and didn't notice further wear but that could be the slower speeds, I usually cruise 75 - 80 on the highway.

The maximum rated pressure for your tire is most likely 42psi.

I only recommend using the maximum pressure with very heavy +700 pound motorcycles. For your middle weight bike I would suggest pressures in the 34-36psi range.

Strange tire wear patterns often develop with mostly worn out tires. No special messages here with the strange tread wear other than you should start shopping for a new tire.

bad wheel bearings will cause that kind of wear as will extremely low pressure. never heard of high pressure doing it. get a better gauge.

Would rear wheel alignment cause unusual wear ? I only just have an idea that it does.
...

possibly, but not likely. the bike wouldnt go straight if the alignment was THAT bad and u still only be rolling on the tires normally, not skidding them.

They seem to go quick near the end and wear funny. It's normal to see it shred at the end of it's life. Probably wore through the outer layer. Get a new tire, adjust/check pressure frequently and monitor wear. If the new tire wears funny then go see Gerry at GP Frame and Wheel in Napa. He has a 3-axis machine that can tell if your bike is straight or not (wheels, forks, swingarm, etc..). If his machine says something is wrong then it's time to take a closer look at things.

exactly as they near the end of life it will seem as though it melted off on your last 100mi ride.
