Hello all, I could use some help convincing
I need to show that there are plenty of people that would prefer this park to cricket or ball fields and ultimately a larger park over industrial development.

I'm curious why you mention industrial development. If that was an option, why wasn't residential development an option? It's selfish to put e-bike/cricket/ball ahead of the housing crisis. An e-bike park in morgan hill or whatever isn't going to inconvenience us much. It just seems like a huge societal cost to dedicate the land to this small slice of society. If the politics are e-bikes vs cricket, then yea I'm all in, but I'd like more clarification.

Signed,

I think you are really on the right track promoting this as something to promote a future increase in electric bikes.

Also, what about getting the electric assist Mountain bike folks involved, seems they could co-exist with dirtbikes on a track.

The majority of the open land was designated as "flexible space" which could include recreation or an industrial development during the EIR process. Housing was ruled out probably because it's next to the treatment plant.

The Economic Development Division wants the development. I'm offering a viable alternative to development that will preserve the open space.

I agree, the E-bikes are blurring the line between pedal bike and motorcycle more and more. I'm sure the State would welcome them.

To be clear, they only consider the space for industrial or recreational use?

The Mayor's rep put it this way- "(Some groups) want no people out there at all, on the other hand the Economic Division wants a development. This park may be a good middle ground".

I think they were worried about chemical or gas releases from the plant as far as housing although they already switched over from the nasty stuff.

The time to fight for housing would have been in 2010 during the EIR. San Jose doesn't necessarily want housing. It wants industrial because everyone lives there but works outside the city and the tax base suffers.

Yes, it's the main feature in the middle of the map. They are modernizing and moving the drying ponds indoors to eliminate odor. The plant footprint will grow but 2600 acres will be reclaimed / opened for development.

They are planning a retail / cleantech based light industrial development along 237. The 40 acre recreational plot is between that and the plant The area to the right of the plant is the flexible space*. It was shown on their map as open space but the ERI has words to the effect; *may be open space, recreation or industrial development.

This is what it looks like right now. The large gray rectangles to the right of the plant and up to the Bay are sludge drying ponds and will be the reclaimed "flexible space" land.

someone mentioned we need more housing...

San Jose as been doing a pretty good job of promoting high density housing near transit centers. More housing at this site would create a problem in an already congested area, transit wise.

plus SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT... it is stinky out there.

While it's not what we all want to hear, they have a point. How many more kids could use a BMX track, skate park, or sports field compared to a moto track that can only be used by a few people with currently very expensive electric bikes?

^^^^
I also don't want to be a debbie downer or chicken little, but this crossed my mind also. That said, if it's enough land, there's enough space for all of it if they design it well enough.

I also wonder - is this the kind of thing that someone in govt will look at and look at santa clara county and say, "well there's already an OHV park in San Jose, how about we just use that somehow for electric bikes only?".

Am I too paranoid?

Nobody is pushing to keep gas bikes out of any existing parks. That's not going to happen. The worst I could think of is if they expanded Metcalf Motorcycle Park into the UTC property and only allowed e-bikes in there and that would be because of the endangered plants that hate nitrogen that exhaust deposits on the ground.

By the way, expanding Metcalf isn't as far fetched as I thought.
