History of motor sports in the South Bay and Alviso...

The southern Bay Area and Alviso have enjoyed a long history of motor sports. According to the San Jose News, Aug 27, 1934, Alviso was the official site of "San Jose's newest sporting enterprise- flat track cycle racing".

Until 1989, the Santa Clara Police Activities League operated a popular motocross track on the west side of Alviso.

Nearby Baylands Raceway operated motocross and flat tracks at its bay side location.

There was an Alviso Speedway until 1963. The clay track was built in 1954 and was under the Western Auto Racing format. NASCAR's San Jose Speedway was its biggest rival.

The mud flats and levees throughout the South Bay, East Bay and Peninsula were used for recreational motorcycle riding and racing in years long past.

A legal and environmentally conscious motor sport recreation venue in this location would be a proper land use for the future.

signed, and put this in the comments section: Creating this park is environmentally progressive and correct. San Jose can, and should, lead the world.

Just got this from the city. I need to prove we want this. only 36 signatures so far :|

"...At that time, active recreation uses such as cricket, softball, soccer and other uses were considered having the highest community benefit because the community is chronically underserved with sports fields which require larger land areas such as this site offers".

Should we be talking to our councilpersons?
Yeah, cricket fields take up lots of area, and there are so few school fields available on weekends.

Posted on SBR? Have you talked to the AMA folks? I'll send a note to Dave Pickett... It seems like we should be able to get many thousand signatures pretty easily, but... herding cats is difficult.

Talking to your councilmember wouldn't hurt. The person they should give feedback to is:

Marybeth Harasz, ASLA, AICP
Deputy Director, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services
City of San José

Yes, posted on SBR and LinkedIn. I don't use Facebook. I'm in contact with AMA leadership and they are working to help.

I'm asking San Jose to partner with and allow State Parks to open an interim park on a 40 acre plot already designated as recreation until the majority of the land designated as "flexible space" is available in 2027.

At that time if allowed, the park would move and the original 40 acres can be developed as ball fields. They say they weren't going to develop the park for ten years anyway.

I think it would help, it's silent eco friendly tech that's new. Seems like a slam dunk to me?

Thanks, I'm thinking about contacting an environmental / parks reporter at the Mercury. I agree, why they aren't more interested in having an official state park like this is beyond me.

do you, er, we have a friend in politics?
Cortese? except he is a county supervisor...
I'll contact Carrasco, my councilperson, and Campos, my assemblywoman, and see if they want to champion our cause.

Hey, barfers, any of you guys know your representatives? This should be addressed on the local and state level.

While it's not what we all want to hear, they have a point. How many more kids could use a BMX track, skate park, or sports field compared to a moto track that can only be used by a few people with currently very expensive electric bikes?

Thanks Butch, I have the attached letters of support from the local district 4 Councilmenber Nguyen, Assemblymember Chu, Supervisor Cortese and the State Park OHMVR Division.

I've been dealing with Fred Buzo at Nguyen's office but have been told that Marybeth Harasz, Deputy Director, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services should now be my single point of contact with the city. Nobody told you guys that. She would be the one your Councilmember should contact.

If anyone needs the documents to give to a representative PM me with your email.

Thanks to all of who have signed, I really appreciate it :thumbup I'll post some of the awesome comments submitted.

There could be a BMX track and a skate park. A several mile mountain bike trail loop and miles of paved multi use trails are included in the main park. I was thinking about an RC airport and RC car tracks, drone racing, etc. Rental bikes will be provided by the park at least until enough users own them.

The phase one interim park would be on 40 acres already designated as recreation and if allowed, move into the much larger area in 10 years. The ball fields could be developed on the 40 acres at that time.

I was told that that park won't be developed for 10 years anyway. We just want to borrow the land for 10 years. The next battle is getting into the reclaimed open space.

For scale; the 40 acre interim park is 1/2 mile long.

Thanks for the comments on the petition :thumbup

- off-road dirt biking is a favorite pastime of mine
- it's a very family-friendly activity
- it's in my backyard
- it would be an innovative attraction that no place else has
- I want to buy an electric bike anyways

I own both internal cumbusion and electric motorbikes. The only place to ride the IC bikes I have are OHV parks and they are getting more restrictive every year due to environmental impact. I know electric bikes have greatly reduce impact and I want to support initiatives which can educate the general public about the difference. Any new areas to ride I'll support.

Creating this park is environmentally progressive and correct. San Jose can, and should, lead the world.

People should have alternatives to enjoy the outdoors that don't include the same boring bird watching stations and disc golf.

We need electric transportation and this park will showcase the capabilities to young people.

This is a great idea!

I'm signing because I believe that an electric OHV park is a sound, viable idea that I would personally participate in. Bring it on!

I think it's a great idea!

A zero emissions OHV park would be a huge benefit to the community. Provide outdoor recreation opportunities near town and not require 60-90 minute drive in a tow vehicle to Hollister of Carnegie OHV parks.

I'm signing because of the joy of having a space to explore and be creative on electric vehicles.

Ahh, cool,

The rental idea totally changes things. I like the idea of it being a testing ground of sorts for the transition to electric vehicles. I'll be signing once I am home to my computer.

Thanks :D

Here is what the main park could look like except a lot bumpier. The land will be a clean slate and will allow terrain to be created. These are from just across from the landfill in Fremont...

Perhaps when the landfill closes it could be incorporated into the park. It's the tallest hill for miles :wtf
