Perspective on FAST street riding

yes it is.:applause to the OP.

I agree and it's part of the reason I sold my F4i. Everytime I hopped on it I would somehow get over 100. I know I shouldn't speed, I know it's not safe and will cost a lot, but it's just a need.

So I bought a DRZ, top speed of 90ish, cruises at 70-75, friggen blast in the hills at the speed limit, and opens up new venues like goats and dirt.

Pushing the limit in the hills is very dangerous- doubling the speed limit tear'n past cars is like russian roulette, sooner or later you WILL "find the loaded chamber".:(

I highly recommend people wise up and look in the mirror, are you really riding safe? What's gonna happen when something bad really happens? Who will support your family? bills? you?

touring to other parts of the country is every bit as enjoyable as a spirited ride, if not more, and (at least me personally) you get into a different mindset of "it's a long road, be safe, and quick when it's appropriate, but no crazy shit."

trackdays with ambulances standing by is about the only time i see triple digits any more, unless it's Nevada, Nebraska or some long, boring state :)

The guy admits he has no control (yet he actually does because he's the operator of the bike) when he gets out on the street. So what, that's him. He's like an alcoholic, he can't just have a drink, he drinks till he's drunk or blacked out. That's his problem. And yes, that problem effects his family and everyone around him, just like an alcoholic or drug addict, or gambler, or whatever the fuck it is that you do that is ruining your life. Not everyone who rides a sport bike has that problem.

The "take it to the track" shit is getting old. Yeah, the tracks there and it's an alternative, but I'm not going to stop riding the street, or get a 'tard, or any of that crap. The only bike that can give you the sensation, the handling, and the other technical advantages of a sport bike is.............wait for it............a fricking sport bike.

The guy couldn't control his impulses so he got off the street. Good for him and the rest of us. I don't need triple digit speeds or the competitive vibe of a group ride when I take my bike out of the garage, but I do need a sport bike for one type of riding I enjoy.

Hello, my name is SP2pilot, and I'm a complete douche when I ride my motorcycle on the street.

Hello SP2pilot, here's your chip, grab some coffee and sit the fuck down.

While.. I think he made the right decision... I too will not give up on the street.. at least not as far as I can see into the future. I don't walk the line like that in any case.. and have a life I want to be around to enjoy and of course I want to pay those bills.. :p

If your a gonzo nut case and can't wait for the next fix.. of the juice.. then yeah I could see it.. but there are plenty of peeps who have some self control and what better choice than a cool sport bike to excercise it on.. I enjoy them and have been pretty good about staying within my own limits.. and I know those limits are not that damn crazy.. my tires tend to last a while and puck dragging on the street is not really my interest..

Yes I bought a tard.. and yes I am digging the 40MPH thing very very much.. but why not live in both worlds..??

I will never get sick of the take it to the track talk.. it makes sense.. and for most once you do.. it changes how you ride.

Nice write up..

Jesus...christ. What a story...especially the post on the 4th page by the OP.

Moments like these make me so very, very glad i've been blessed by having the mentors i have, the ones that have guided me in the right direction, taken me to the track, encourage me to ride at the level I ride at, and to not give in to the demons that sit on my shoulder...in recent history, they have all but disappeared during street riding. Street riding is to train good habits, good muscle memory for the track...and to come home to my g/f and my friends at the end of the day, and smile happily. Not ride until the ragged edge of adrenaline strikes.

I have seen that moment the the OP in that thread talks about, and thankfully, my 3 feet was not occupied by a car...i made the turn, and i remember that every time i walk out to my motorcycle. I have about a 300 foot walk from my front door to my bike, it takes me about 45 seconds, and that's enough time for me to think about the consequences of my actions, to remember to ride well within my comfort zone, and to remember that if i play my cards right, i have upwards of 50 years of riding time in my future...i don't need to rail today, it will come in the next 10 years...or if not then, the next 20 years...or 30. The same thoughts go through my head every time i pull on each piece of gear...why i wear what i wear, boots, gloves, one piece suit, helmet...I remind myself that the first goal is to never use this gear, only wear it. I'm content to sit, ride, enjoy the air and the mountains every day i ride, and maybe someday, i'll be "quick". Until then, each day is a gift, and remembering that will help me stay alive on the street.

On the track, now...all bets are off. The track is where i play the speed game, feel my limits, expand my horizons on cornerspeed and traction limits...but that behavior stays on the track. I will never willingly ride above my limits again. If you're faster, you're faster. That's fine. There will always be someone faster.

To expand on the Russian roulette analogy a bit...

On the street, a good-natured race between well-matched riders with extremely competitive personalities, the "winner" won't be the one with the better skills or tactics, it will be the one willing to take the most chances. A guy willing to play Russian roulette with two loaded chambers has an advantage over a guy whose limit is one. At least until the hammer lands on one of those two chambers.

Damn that entire thread brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes I wish I had someone other than myself to tell me to slow down.

With all the people selling their sportbikes, we are in for a good drop in the used bike prices. :thumbup

Joking aside, everyone who goes through these stupid fast days, seems to have an epiphany of some sort at one point or another. What we need to understand, is that there are many more out there who haven't had such awakenings yet... and in a year or two or ten, we will see them say the same kind of words... if they are still around, that is. Good writeup.

Dude you are a tool, My impulses are just fine. I would suggest a little less ego and a bit more understanding that not all people subscribe to your deffinition of impulse control.

I would even suggest that you are in ful- on denial and will someday look back on your response to that posts as assinine.

Dude. Glad you survived, and that you don't ride like a dick on the street anymore. I'm sure it's not your fault you owned such an irresponsible sportbike.;)
