How many hours(minutes?) per day do you practice? Create? Just noodle?

If not on the daily, then how many per week?

At the moment, I practice between 30 minutes and an hour a day. I’m trying to play the head of Mike Stern’s “Chromazone” at tempo, which is revealing some problems with my picking. It’s sixteenth notes at 120 bpm, minimum, which is kind of an intermediate zone between slower and faster runs that I’ve always had some trouble with.

I’ve also had some nerve damage in my neck that affects the last two fingers on the left hand. It’s much better than it was a couple of years ago but I notice those fingers don’t respond as fast as I expect them to without quite a bit of warm-up. Up tempo tunes like Chromazone reveal issues with hand synchronization accordingly.

Practice usually consists of picking exercises to focus on building speed and synchronization, one or two scale fingerings, playing Chromazone and jamming over a random backing track, ideally one I haven’t heard before.

There was a time when I practiced between four and six hours a day, but I’m lucky to get an hour at a stretch now.

^^^We share some commonality for sure. Though jazz is pretty hit or miss for me. Some I really enjoy(Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, “some” Holdsworth), but some is so bad I can’t even pretend to listen to it. I recently tried to watch a clip of Gambale showcasing...well, showcasing fucking Gambale as usual, and it was just awful. I appreciate and respect the skill, but my ears glaze over after about 20sec of that meandering crap.

Also, I believe we were chatting re Plini and his new stuff at some point? He dropped his EP in December in case you want to scope it.

Just curious Andy, how many guitars do you have these days? What's your typical go-to and, refresh my memory, didn't you have a Parker Fly at one point?

I have five electrics, one acoustic and a bass. The go-to is an EBMM Steve Morse model. I do still have a Parker Fly.

Have heard Plini's Ep. Just came across Owane last night. Have you heard of this guy?
Yes! Love his stuff!!! He did some work on Jack Gardiner’s new ep that I really like.

Jakub Zytecki is another guy you might like. I really, really dig his clean/percussive style.

The other three are:

A G&L Rampage from back in the days where one pickup and a volume knob were all the rage. I never play it and should find someone who wants to get their late 80's on.

An Ibanez Musician Series, also from the early 80's. Very playable still, but I made a bit of a mess of the thing replacing pickups and changing the pickup configuration. At the time it fulfilled a need, so I can't have too many regrets, but in hindsight, it might have been nice to just let it be what it was.

The last is a guitar I built. Neck through construction; neck is laminated strips of maple and walnut with an ebony fingerboard and graphite reinforcing bar. 24 frets. Body is a redwood burl, left mostly in its natural shape. EMG pickups, wired in a Gibson configuration.

Nice. I watch a lot of Darrell Braun Guitar videos on YouTube and it's really getting me motivated to build a guitar. Probably a kit to start but I'd rather not dive in by biting off more than I can chew. Thing is, what the hell am I going to do with a built guitar? If I don't like it after all or I end up building more than one, what the hell do you do with them? Do other people make a habit of buying kit guitar builds? :dunno

I built a Solo les paul kit. It was fun. The wood is high quality, but forget about getting any good tone out of the guangdong special electronics. I threw some used pots and burstbuckers in it and its a great backup guitar that i dont mind playing in bed and whacking it on the nightstand.

I had a dream that i built a california themed strat with old growth redwood for the body, roasted sierra pine neck and abalone shell inlays fished out of the pacific with the bear flag branded on the back of the body. One day i will do it.

My next door neighbor let me borrow his 1965 strat today. He bought it new, had all case candy and everything. This guitar has "it". I now understand the big deal of the strat quack.

I’ve never played anything with a 7” radius. That thing looks like a balloon.:laughing

Except for 1 10”(jh6) and a couple 12-16” compound(evh and Ibby az) guitars, all my instruments are 20”

I’m sure I could adjust, but dang...7”? Not being a strat guy, I didn’t even know that bulbous a radius even existed.

I got an errant email from Positive Grid intended for someone else. This other customer ordered the Spark amp but it's backordered until sometime next month so they sent a code for a Bias Fx 2 Pro license ($199 value).

I am not a thief so I won't use the code but dang.

Heh, I just got another email from them. It seems not everyone shares my value for integrity
