His fans? What about just fans of the sport? You remember maybe when personal fandom ranked below that of the whole process?

Maybe not. It was before smart phones after all...

Damn you're a crusty old dude. I bet you spent a lot of time racing motorcycles. :afm199

heres your anwswer. with bother with a place that's inherently negative where you can go elsewhere for more positive interaction

It's funny because a year or two ago, it was Rossi fans that were being toxic and hyper negative. Now it's the Marquez nut swingers that are the a-holes. Funny how that works.

Not as fast as I look.

Really? Who the hell are the Marquez nut swingers? It looks like it is STILL the "yellow hoard" that are pissed off that Yamaha can't built a Rossi bike to beat everyone. Gee Buzz!!! I have said it before: "Rossi may be the worst thing to happen to MotoGP". It became all about the player, rather than the game when the minimally informed started watching the racing, just at the time Rossi was dominating. Now the complaint is that BARF isn't a Rossi haven, anymore. Well, Japan ain't one either. Get over it. whiners. dsapsis gets it,

sports have been about the player long before Rossi. think of any memory of any sport. what comes to mind first? what proportion of your memories are NOT about some person doing something amazing? I bet you dont have many. "remember when Steve Young won the Super Bowl". "remember when Michael Jordon clinched the title". "remember when Garry Mccoy slid the bike all over the place". "remember when Freddie punted Roberts". the subject of all those thoughts is a person. they arent general memories about how much you enjoyed the season. even cheering for a team in a ball sport is still people, not the game. no one puts the game on a Wheaties box.

I don’t know about any of that but I genuinely believe your vitriol essentially destroyed this sub forum.

Every single time I drop back in, the threads are dominated by you being non inclusive, argumentative, filled with anger and hate and vitriol. There’s no reason to be a part of this sub forum any longer. Due to you specifically

It’s hard to force a change in anyone else’s behavior but the best way I know of to improve the situation is to model the behavior we’d like to see in others.

Its less about wanting Rossi to win than it is about wanting anyone else but Marquez to win. My dislike for Marquez is not influenced by my fandom for Rossi. TBH, as the years go on, Ive kind of given up on Rossi ever returning to his former glory and Id rather see him slip into a managerial role. As far as Marquez goes, he is actively making the championship hard to watch for anyone that isnt a diehard 93 fan. Just because someone doesnt like Marquez doesnt automatically make them a 46 fan. You should probably flush that notion out of your brain because its not always about "my team vs your team". sometimes its just about the simple sentiment of "Fuck that guy".

also, dsapsis wears being old and out of touch like a badge of honor. I dont have anything to say to someone like that.

I'm a bit lost on the Marquez is "actively making the championship hard to watch for anyone that isnt a diehard 93 fan" part. I haven't found anything more difficult to watch than in past years.

All I see is a guy doing his job really well. Marquez is fast but he's not unbeatable and he does make mistakes. Marquez and Honda are not going to let up so everyone else needs to step it up. Thats how competition gets better. Watching the other racers and teams respond will keep my interest in the series.

This is me, although I fully admit I'm more 93 than I am any other rider.

The most fascinating thing for me this year has been watching Ducati go stagnant without Lorenzo to tell them what to fix.

Agreed. I actually am a hardcore racing fan. I might like one guy a bit more than another but talent is talent and watching whomever is shredding the field is still fun for me.

I actually did not really like Rossi for a long time. Same goes for MM now.
I still like to watch him race, save, win just like I did for Rossi in his heyday.

Hoping others step up and battle makes it interesting and when they do.. it gets my panties tightening up.

Agreed !
Same thing in SBK. It's good to see Ducati and Yamaha bringing the fight to Kawasaki/Rea. Factory BMW is making progress. Next year, HRC will join the fight. All good !

I don’t understand how a “true” racing fan could not like Marquez. The dude does things on a motorcycle that we’ve never seen before and no one else can replicate.

How a “true” racing fan can’t enjoy that is beyond me.

I don't actually dislike Marquez, I just get tired of Honda being able to buy the best talent. Spencer, Doohan, Stoner, etc and in Supercross- McGrath, Stanton, Johnson etc. I think anyone who is a serious fan of racing must admit that , right now, Marquez is on a completely different level than everyone else. Which is good for the sport as eventually new riders , using him as a benchmark, develop talents to surpass his. Rossi is popular not just for his riding ability. In the old days it was his obvious joy at racing, his ability to overcome things, ( Phillip Island) and his seeming friendliness with fans and teams alike. Marquez is a bit more reserved, although I really liked seeing his excitement at Brother Alex winning the Moto2 Title.

This thread has taken a bit of a strange turn of introspection. If it's old school to honor the game above the players, so be it.

As far as tone and negativity, while Robert is very much correct that fans gravitate to individuals, it is biased to more casual fans, and folks with some degree of temperance tend to moderate their more reflexive and outlandish thoughts in the interest of decorum and maybe making a conversation worth participating in. Back when I frequented this forum more, I played the foil to the anti-Pedrosa/Jorge cabal because not only was their style so abusive, the actual content of their arguments were weak.

There are a number of insightful and civic posters here -- stang13, Map8, SFMCjohn, and a bunch more. Maybe it's just the way of the internet. Doesn't have to be like that. I'm sure Bud would love to see this sub-forum return to good analytics, playful jibing, and celebration of the wonder of roadracing. Yeah. Maybe I am old.
