Morning commute ended in a motorcycle fire

2. Shorai batteries are all Lithium Ion. Which, in our bikes seem to require a Li-Ion specific reg/rec so the stator doesn't overcharge the battery and the wires don't get too hot and burn up

Over charging is a problem either with old stock Lead or the new Li Ion...

All that is required by Shorai when up grading from stock to Li Ion
battery is to verify that your charging system is working properly and
the output voltage is within the recommended range of 13.6-14.4v. At
no time should the charging system output be above 15.2v for it can
damage the old lead or the new Li Ion battery.

:wow That's scary stuff. What connection was that? Did the fairing catch fire?

The connection was the QD on the Rec/Reg...

Story goes that Bob and Pam Solloway of Coventry UK, a couple of RC45
freaks, were on the way to Misano WSB when Pam's RC45 caught fire
while stopped at a light... the flames were beat back by a bottle of
water from a passing motorist... they thanked their lucky stars the
incident did not occur out in the middle of nowhere for it might have
spread rapidly to the fuel lines and then the tank... nothing worst as
watching your prize consumed by fire...

1. Munroe motors very likely put in an OEM replacement (which isn't made for Li-Ion batteries).
2. Shorai batteries are all Lithium Ion. Which, in our bikes seem to require a Li-Ion specific reg/rec so the stator doesn't overcharge the battery and the wires don't get too hot and burn up (as I mentioned, happened to me and I highly suspect that's what happened to your bike too)

Well then I can guarantee it was not a Shorai battery. I know for a fact I got a lead acid battery that was the standard fitment for my bike. Obviously I was wrong about the brand. But a lithium battery is not part of this story.

Glad you didn't lose the whole bike. I think the manager of the McDonalds needs to give some training to her employees. No one seemed to know immediately where the fire extinguisher was. What if it was an oil fire in the kitchen, a car burning in the parking lot, or a person on fire in the kitchen? I looked like the extinguisher was on the floor, and not on a wall mount, and it was obvious that most didn't know where it was. A little forethought and training would go a long way.

And different fire extinguisher classifications for general, liquids, and electrical.

It was an ABC fire extinguisher which most common unit used. It's good for A is for trash, wood, and paper; class B is for liquids and gases; and class C is for energized electrical sources.

Type D extinguishers are pretty rare and specialized for flammable metals.

Now fire suppression systems typically are either water, foam or for valuable equipment like server rooms, a clean agent like a FM-200 system (computer rooms etc.). Yes there are clean agent fire extinguishers.

But liquid extinguishers are pretty rare these days. I have honestly not seen any in use.

Darkness!

Where's the kick starter?

Ah, ok. Any update on what actually happened to your bike Zack?

The verdict is good and bad or maybe bad and good? It was shy of totaling. The wiring harness has to be replaced. It looks like it was electrical and may have started with one of the wires in the charging system based on the fact that it was the most damaged wire.

So now I am just waiting on parts from England. 2-6 week estimate. I am hoping closure to 2 weeks and that impact of the COVID-19 that has been impacting the Asian supply chain is not yet impacting the European one.

In the meantime, it has given me some time to bust out the clutch plate kit I have for my GSXR and see if I can't get that back on the road in the meantime.

Being stuck in a car sucks.:(
