Morning commute ended in a motorcycle fire

Well this was not how I planned to start my day. I left for work and while idling for a few seconds waiting for the light to change to get on the freeway, I noticed that there was a small amount of smoke coming up between my legs. I quickly pulled into the parking lot next to a McDonalds. A quick inspection of my bike I saw the source of the smoke, a small open flame above the engine headers and below the gas tank (I am guessing a leaking fuel line). I then ran to the McDonalds, got a fire extinguisher and dosed the fire. I think it was small enough and I stopped it soon enough that I hopping the damage is minor.

Anyone have any good mechanics to recommend around the Benicia area?

Watching the video, I am still gobsmacked that I initially tried to put the fire out by blowing on it.:wtf I know better than to do that, but panic does crazy things to your head.

BRG is very good but in my experience not the fastest shop if you need your bike back quickly.

Yes not a good way to start your day at all.:(
Looks like you caught it in just enough time.
Funny fumbling through McDonald's... you spent so much time looking for the extinguisher you could of flipped some burgers and taken an order or two?
Back goes Zack to put out the flames great save!
Walks back the extinguisher after picking up the key to the bike.
Whammy is then puzzled......
When did it hit you that you left your phone??:wtf:wow

Hope the damage is minimal.:thumbup:teeth:ride

It's a work phone. My old eyes want an upgrade, so possibly I forgot as a subconscious way to upgrade. :teeth

My mistake at McDonalds was I was assuming it would be on a wall bracket not just sitting on the floor gathering grease and dust. Watching the video now, it amazes me that I didn't see it as I entered.

The whole time I'm yelling "DO NOT LIKE" "DO NOT LIKE" I'm glad you weren't hurt. :( Sorry for any damage to the bike.

Hot, roasted nuts! Get yer hot, roasted nuts here folks!

Nice catch, I'd have been on the freeway with flames licking up my thighs before I noticed.

Glad you came away unscathed.

Same happend to me last year on my driveway. https://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533607

I also tried to blow it out. When that didn't work I ran to the garage and looked for the extinguisher but didnt see it. Panic increasing I went to the house front door and looked for the other extinguisher normally there. Didnt see it either. Ran to garden hose and put out the fire. Later once calm settled in I saw both extinguishers near where I had previously looked. Performance suffers under stress.
Root cause was contact breakers igniting plastic housing on my fuel pump.

glad you're ok and nothing exploded or was consumed by fire.

i doubt i'd have had the presence of mind to go get an extinguisher from the mcDs. good thinking!

Good job putting the fire out.

Yeah, the blowing on it was kinda funny. :bbq

Here's to the repair bill being just a matter of replacing parts and nothing too major.

Lol dude makes the classic video game umph sound when jumping!!!

Good stuff man. Don’t trip on trying to blow out the flame. You tried and realized it wasn’t gonna work, switched it and did the right thing.
