Unholy Blasphemies
Just explains are poor linguistic skills and impatience to actually talk to people.

Similar to this "That feeling when you....."

I hate those memes or types of talk. I want to respond on Facebook when I see what with "What feeling? what about it?"

It's not a complete sentence.

Boils down to laziness and probably proves we reading less and are probably getting dumber.

Or, maybe language evolves.

Eh, this is just a tired argument used to police the language of others. Language evolves, it shifts, it changes. We use the word "Terrific" to describe things positively, but its root word is "Terror"

Same with "Incredible!" but it's literal meaning is "Not credible" - it should be something you say to someone when you're accusing them of lying to you.

An english sentence contains a ton of words that don't serve any purpose towards the communication of its meaning. I've noticed this quite a bit in learning ASL. When you an english sentence that you want to translate, you end up dropping about half of the words before converting them to sign. And yet you don't lose any part of the original meaning, context, etc.

Brevity being the soul of wit and all, I think that properly done they can be quite clever. And especially useful in pointing out contrasts or inconsistencies.

Can they mislead? Sure, but then so can every single form of media.

Good writing is as concise as possible. It is a skill that our society is losing. Memes are prolly an indication of that. Me using “prolly” is probably an an indication of our acceptance of... shit.

Crap is the new normal.

You guys crack me up. Meme posters on the Internet are just today's clever bumperstickers. We rarely use those anymore but it's the same quick jab to make some point. And you don't end up desecrating your bumper with 'em.

They are no more upsetting to me than those. Obviously, if you are getting serious from Russian Troll Farm stuff, then its on you.

I like the social/cultural ones, not so much the political ones.

Or, maybe language evolves.

Back to what, noises and gestures, great. That's not evolving, it's communicating less. Less uses of language is bad. That's why they tell kids any reading is good reading, build vocabulary.

What bothers me is they aren't ones' owns thoughts, it's someone else's thought they are recycling to express themselves because they are too lazy to figure out how to say it on their own.

don't worry guy- there are no original thoughts anymore. embrace collectivism or flail to your metaphorical death in the metaphorical tar pit.

Actually, the point of my thread is that the meme o sphere is a serious communication tool for some. Many. Their opinions and voting are affected by these cartoons. (effected? I could never finger that out)

I could be wrong. Continue discussion, thank you.

Meme's are about the worst thing that has happened to this country, it gives a ton of people the ability to manipulate, mislead and take cheap shots at just about anybody. They appeal to out basest instincts and almost always have a teenage boy approach to humor.

They are pretty much like today's headline news, trying to trigger an emotional response from people with very little effort made to stick to the truth.

They only meaningfully impact stupid people.

Make your time.

I have assumed 95% since around 3rd grade. Are you suggesting more?
I think a lot of people thought a lot less.

I think there is a lot of reassessing going on.

I do know that back when I was interacting with a lot of them, less than 75% of programmers were competent, and less than 5% were what I'd consider good.

Fair enough. That re-assessment is probably good, but not enough people will do it.
