The Long Goodbye

Well, that was fun. And you made a lot of friends along the way, the kind that you'd want to talk to again some day. Now when thinking back on that long message I sent you last year or so (you complimented me on the length and thoughtfulness) I touched on the relationship thing. Now you see. The cool thing is that you got a lot of things out of your system that will enable that relationship to go forward much more positively now- together or apart. There's a certain sense of self-actualization after a journey like the one you just had. I didn't read the thread each day but I checked it out time to time and commented when I had something to offer. One thing that is unquestionably cool (besides me I mean... :p) is that when you revisit all of those places, you know where to go for guaranteed fun, can adapt the trip to your guest's tastes and will have a starting base even when things go awry. I can go to Montana and know where to ski, camp, or look for nice art. I can go to Texas and know where to be on Thursday nights (Houston!), to Michigan and water ski or fish... etc. All in all, I'm glad you're home safe, healthy and happy. Except... how do we replace Liam spotting on the Forum?! I have to say, it is rather nice that you got to see three different champions. I'm not sure it'd have been as fun with Doohan winning all the time. During the Liam years, my favorite race was Portugal, not only because Nicky got knocked off but also Valentino got spanked at the line by Elias. We need more close races like that! Thanks again Liam.

Thanks All, I'm almost back

Seems like everyday I'm finding new things to do, new things to relearn and re-conquer, and I'm having FUN! Not to say that there were many parts of my previous life that weren't fun, but I'm finding a sense of balance and peace now that I don't feel like I'm always on the run, always headed to the next race. I've had some long talks with former team-mates and others in the business who are no pursuing other careers, Chuck Aksland especially. It's great to catch up, no need for guarded words and brush-offs on subjects like tires, who's running what and where and when. It does feel odd, but there are trades you make that you can place a value on and that aren't readily apparent.

I'm cooking again! I am loving it, because these last years I never felt like I had my own kitchen, my own space to create and experiment. I've put on close to 15 pounds since the close of last season (reminder: must get back to race-weight, hahaha).

Many friends, that's right, and I've been unable to touch all of them since I started my change. My website has been corrupted since last summer, making it difficult to deal with, upload to, post on, etc. I aim to get that all straightened out soon, but with trips to the DMV, numerous doctor's appointments coming, and just getting back to homebase, I haven't really spent any time on it. There's always something to do and see, wherever you are, and as intimated in my previous post, I'm riding again! Not sure who (schteve, I think) nabbed some video during a group ride I joined up in the hills a few weekends ago and I had a great time scrubbing in my new tires. My bike isn't really ready to be shown yet, but I'm sure I'll do something detailed in the future. True to the norm, I'm waiting on parts for it!!! In the meantime, it runs, and so do I. Speaking of which, I'm looking for an experienced welder to take care of some special things for me, so if anyone knows someone meticulous, detail-oriented, and damn good, please point them or me in the right direction. I have something all the way from Spondon (whose fab shop i visited outside of Derby, in England) that needs repair and modification :)

Oh, and someone pointed out Supercross is this weekend in SF! Who else is going? You always run into Rainey there - who knows who else might be around? Ahh, I almost forgot, I finally got around to mounting up the fat whitewall tires I bought for my monkey earlier this year in Singapore (then transported to the Malaysia GP, then had them flown out with our team gear to Valencia, where they were then brought back to SF by my partner!).

As for getting all of my things back here, it's been something of a mess. Not so much a problem with Customs, but just dealing with a shipping agency in Barcelona, then one in New Jersey, then another out of LA (all of whom are nickel-and-diming me to death), means that I'm still waiting for all my things to arrive from Europe. I've been getting by with my standard "long haul kit", but I have some incredible things coming back with me and I'm anxious to have them. Anyway, food's on the stove and I've got things to do! I've been so media deprived these last years (save for movies on flights and what I could manage to download via Spain's crappy internet) that it's been awesome to just sit back in the evenings and watch some video's.

We'll plan for something in February when I should (hopefully) have my things back stateside, I'm thinking something mellow and centrally located in SF. The Ace Cafe? Sounds good to me :) Will update more as time allows. Thanks to everyone who's come up and said hi and introduced themselves, it feels good to be back.

Liam,
OK, I can wait a bit longer for the bike pics man.
As far as welding goes, the absolute best welder I have ever seen is a friend of mine by the name of Paul McCain. He owns Orb engineering, and is the welder for Dale Walker and Holeshot Performance. I can give you many references from work he has done for me, but really, all you need to do is look at a Holeshot pipe, and there you have it.
He can be reached at
pmcorb123@cruzio.com
or better at 83one-345-8zero96
Please tell him that I sent you.
Take care Bro, and be well.

Repsol HRC... Swag!!!
Good friend of mine who use to be on my route can weld for you. No longer in my route but is still in Santa Clara off Walsh. His name is John Connell, cell#408-316-5801. Did work for me on my Gixxer. I don't know if he's any better than Lonster's^ guy but, you know how meticulously anal I am. John's work looked good to me. He never charged me and I'm sure he'd hook you up too, just mention me and you'll be all good. Good luck!
