Let's sing the praises of driver assistance and Teslas

Since buying a home in August, my commute has changed which means a lot more lane sharing then in the past on multiple routes which has really prompted to me to notice how much better drivers are getting about lane sharing, particularly newer vehicles with driver assistance. The Tesla is actually one that stands out to me because in the past, my experience had always been that luxury vehicles were the worst. It seems to me the driver aids on the Tesla have largely flattened that issue. I find seeing those warning lights in people's side mirrors as a reassuring sign. With driver aids becoming ubiquitous, even becoming standard on many economy class cars, it has helped in my experience.

Has anyone else noticed?

Just remember idiots can still pilot them manually so don't get too comfortable around them.

I drove next to a guy in a Model S the other day full on napping. He had his seat laid back, a pillow and his leg propped up to the steering wheel to defeat the sensor.

Teslas are the new priuses to me. The article posted above, where they meander around in the center of the lane seems to define them best.

They do seem to move over if given some time to notice me, which is only when I get stuck behind one.

I didn't know about the driver alerts, will be interesting to see if I notice them now.

Whatever that means
If I ever see those Waymo or other auto pilot cars driving around the city i make a point to ride like an asshole near them, get real close and cut them off so they get data on how to avoid asshole motorcyclists.

I'm doing it for everyone's safety.

Cadillac's have the same feature on such equipped cars.
It should be mandatory on all cars to have the light in the mirror when something approaches your blind spot.
AKS Me how i know?
The Super Cruise also is way better than the tesla.
Yea I own and love Cadillacs.

Do they automatically brake? Ie if someone wanted to merge into traffic, could they just cut in front of the first Tesla they see and brake check it and assume the sensors will make it stop or leave a gap?

Asking for a friend.

I test drove a Model 3 Performance, just to experience autopilot, the GUI and the acceleration. I'm a investor, so I would rather invest then buy a shinny new money sucker.

The autopilot was very amazing, it really drives well with merging and going from 90 MPH to stop an go traffic. I was still very nervous with my hands and feet not putting any input into the controls.

I'm fine splitting past Tesla 5 days a week.

Haha sometimes I like to follow them around if they're going my way and see how it will react to stuff.

I have rented a Model 3 that had Autopilot and it's the ultimate gridlock traffic feature. It's so much more relaxing driving in traffic with the auto pilot. But I would be happy with just the radar cruise control so all you do is turn it on set the distance and all you have to do is keep the car in the lanes, none of my cars got that o_O'

Teslas aren't that good at seeing motorcycles as you imply.

Firstly, they don't have the yellow triangle feature.

Secondly, the only ones with camera based blond spot monitoring are refresh models made after mid 2016.

I think Tesla drivers are just more responsible in general.

My wife is noodling getting a new car and all of them have those features but thankfully, at least the one I think she'll end up with, (CX5 turbo) you can turn all that shit off.

Specifically the feature that takes control of the steering wheel if it thinks you are straying from your lane.

And any of the other shit that beeps or boops to "save" you from your "bad" driving.

Yep, nothing like turning off safety features that can save motorcyclists lives! :thumbup

Don't forget to pull the ABS fuse as well.

Unlike the shit ABS on my first F800ST I've found auto ABS to be an excellent system on any car I've driven. I'm assuming the auto braking feature on some cars has value.

But some of these other intervention "features" are of little value to an experienced non distracted driver.

Neither my wife or I has EVER come close to injuring a motorcyclist.

And we didn't need these "features" to do so but I recognize that for many these features may indeed prevent their distraction from having terrible results.

I'm turning off the stupid auto engine shutdown "feature" as well. :laughing

The tech is meant to be another safety blanket, but to be used in conjunction with proper driving skills, rather than in lieu of... unfortunately many become so reliant on the tech that it gets to a point where the skills fade.

Most people don't bother to look over their shoulders anymore before reversing, and stare straight down at a screen instead. Similar to changing lanes, I rarely see anyone check their blind spot before changing lanes, relying on their blindspot detection light in the mirror instead.

Indeed I'll still use my mirrors and head check when changing lanes as I assume you can't disable all the flashing stuff and beeps.

I'll even read the manual! :laughing
