another crappy article by someone who knows nothing about riding, its right up there with Time magazines report on the increase of motorcycle deaths in 2009-2010 in Florida without ever mentioning that Florida repealed its helmet law in 2008

Very disappointing that it didn't quote a single statistic related to lane sharing.

sounds like waaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I think the real way to cut deaths is mandatory training. i.e. MSF.

Also, registrations more than doubled and fatalities dident double. a good sign.

Exactly. The article, not exaggerated, says:

I have almost hit lane splitting motorcycles. But it's legal. But it can't be safe! More motorcyclists are dying! Twice as many!

Left as an exercise to the reader is to illogically connect the dots and assume lane splitting is killing people. It's also left to the reader to NOT ask whether the PER CAPITA fatality rate has increased, and by what amount.

As an aside, I dated a writer for the LA Times for a few years. I pitched an article about lane sharing to her to hopefully teach drivers that it's legal and the reasons we do it. Her editor, after seeing the first draft of the article, made her rewrite it so it emphasized how dangerous it is and how much car drivers can't stand it. :thumbdown

modern day journalists are not journalists at all. I have more respect for the writers of owner's manuals than I do most journalists these days

How do these idiots "nearly collide" with lane splitters? If you drive in a straight line, you won't collide with anything going faster than you in a straight line. If you're playing Weavy McCellphone on the freeway of course lane splitting will be dangerous, because you're making it dangerous.

F---

Haha I was wondering the same thing. How does a car driver "nearly collide" with motos?

All to often when I am lane splitting, I see all to often the people talking texting, reading the book, putting on the make-up, etc and they are not paying attention to the road in front of them.

You know---they actually teach people in writing classes, how to make an article out of nothing--to revolve around a thesis that may or may not exist.

:laughing:laughing

Yeah, how about that.

Did I miss any analysis of motorcycle deaths as percentage of registered vehicles by State?

DataDan should chime in here.

DataDan doesn't even know where to start. :dunno

Mr. Rhee's reasoning is so convoluted, so fatuous, it would be like trying to argue with a smartass 4th-grader (think Cartman).

Lane-splitting pisses me off. California allows lane-splitting. US motorcycling deaths have increased sharply over the past 10 years. California motorcycle deaths have increased too.

Coincidence? I think not!

You know what pisses me off about all these articles that say:

"Still, motorcyclists account for a disproportionate share of traffic fatalities, and they are about 37 times more likely to be killed than those traveling in passenger cars."

Hmm I wonder why that is? Because I dont have a FUCKING CAR PROTECTING ME. Jesus who hires these people? I'm guessing a journalism degree takes about as much knowledge as going to a Barnes and Nobles and picking up Journalism for Dummies. This seriously pisses me off and its not even the main point of the article.

Safety Features on a Motorcycle:
  • Helmet
  • Leathers
  • My skill as a rider

Safety Features on/in a vehicle:
  • Airbags
  • "Crumple Zones" (Or whatever they call them)
  • Seat Belts
  • Steel/Aluminum/TONS OF PLASTIC
  • The Car Itself
  • Warning Sensors
  • Early Warning Radar
  • If you own a BMW it has auto-pilot these days

Also, why the fuck does it matter that Motorcycle deaths offset seatbelt/vehicle safety features and the lives they have saved? What's the connection? How do they link in any sense? They are two completely different issues and cannot be tackled in the same way at all. In fact they don't really matter in my opinion.

Another thing, I'm so fucking glad we are spending $2.4million on a study to understand motorcycle crashes. Let me give you the causes of "accident" on motorcycles:

It Usually boils down to one of these:
  • Stupid Rider
  • Stupid Driver
  • Bad Rider
  • Bad Driver

Give me the $2.4million thanks.

Quick fact: Motorcycles are more dangerous then cars and probably always will be. The only thing that can make motorcycles more safe short of iron man armor is the skill of a rider coupled with smarter/safer drivers.

I LIKE MOTORCYCLES LOL
i went ahead and took one of the more retarded comments for you guys to read..

"The practice of lane splitting by motorcycles is probably or even certainly unsafe. What is missing in this discussion is – Why is it permitted? Or more to the point – Why is it not made illegal? The answer is – It is permitted so that police and Highway Patrol motorcycle officers can legally do it. All the other motorcycle riders are getting essentially a free ride to lane split on the coattails of the law enforcement motorcycles."

:teeth this was one of the only comments i saw AGAINST lane sharing.
