Interesting conversations on an airplane

Not quite an airplane but close. We took the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle back to the bay area and had a sleeper compartment. When you book a sleeper, meals are included and for dinner they seat you with other passengers at the table for 4. The other couple were train geeks. She had crossing arm earrings, both were wearing shirts with trains on them and he had a scanner plugged into his ear so he could monitor the train radio.
As soon as we sat down, he started explaining all the train stuff like type of cars, type of engine, what the little white signs along the track meant. At first it was interesting but after about 10 minutes I was done. We ate our dinner, skipped dessert and drinks and headed for the lounge car.

Did you punch him in the face? :twofinger

Unless they're a very attractive woman I avoid any serious discussions now. My favorite passenger is the dude who said "Good morning" and then put on noise cancelling headphones for the rest of the flight. A hero.

I don't know. I must be weird, but I appreciate enthusiasm in other people regardless of the topic. I would have enjoyed that dinner with that couple.

I agree and I like to talk about my passions as well but train, train, train, drone, drone, drone, train, train, train, train, train, drone, drone, drone, train, train, train, train, train, drone, drone, drone, train, train.
There was no room for other conversations.

Enchanter's story wins hands down.

I have two. Coming back from a Greek vacation I sat next to a Greek guy watching wrestling on the screen on the seat back. I asked if he was a wrestler, the dude was big and strong but carried about 20 extra pounds. He turned out to be a former Scuba Diver for the Greek Navy, whose job was to protect monuments. (There's a huge antiquity traffic problem in Greece.) People steal them daily. He was on his way to a job at a Northwestern University as a professor.

The other interesting one was a young college linebacker sitting in the middle seat. Dude was only about 5'9" but he was an axehandle wide. We both joked about it. I felt like I was leaning on an oak tree. I offered to swap seats so he could have some shoulder space, and he was glad to. I had the aisle seat.

I had a similar experience with a kid I met in line to board a Southwest flight. I say 'kid' because he was fresh out of high school about to take his first flight to college where he was going to play offensive lineman. He was easily 6'5" and about 315 lbs. And, yes, the school paid for two seats for him. (I love sitting next to people who have two seats. It guarantees that the middle seat will stay open.)

I did my best to help him find his way around and held a spot for him since he had a C spot, and I had a low A spot. I never looked him up, but I hope he did well with his football career and/or education.

I sat next to Russian couple that were wearing about $50,000 worth of Rolex' each and she had expensive jewelry. They were super nice and kept ordering snacks and sharing them with me.

I love how this thread keeps bringing back memories. The expensive jewelry reminds me of the time when I was on the same flight out of San Luis Obispo as Jack Lalanne and his wife. Jack's wife was decked out in a fur coat and LOTS of jewelry while Jack was flirting with all the young women in the airport. :teeth

Not on a plane, but I was on overnight train in Thailand. I think to Chang Mai. I was on the "isle" so when not sleeping lower bunk turns in to a table and two seats. There was a Chinese girl there, so in the morning we started to chat as we waited for arrival and were eating breakfast. She was traveling with her friends, and was first time out of the country. Scared, but very excited. Somehow conversation turned to her glasses. Which turned out to be fake, and she wore them because it was one of those things that was popular at that time with her cohorts. I guess idea was it made you look smarter.

I met some cool folks on a train ride from northern England to Scotland. We said we'd keep in touch but of course we never did. Take those happenings for what they are, a blip in time.

Did you follow along with the tourist tradition of rubbing Juliet’s statue's right boobie?

Yes I rubbed Juliet's breast... do you know about the tradition of putting your right heel on the Bull’s testicles and spinning three times within the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan???
