Holiday potlucks

WTF does everyone (ok not everyone) bring desserts or cookies? 1 dessert is fine, but cookies? No one is going to eat that shit. Especially cheap, store bought cookies - the one with all that glaze and sugary sprinkles on top.

I have this potluck coming up this weekend and aside from myself, one other and the hosts, half the other stuff on the list are sweets. FFS, its not that hard to cook something simple. Please, don't do it.

tastes like burning
My work is providing both food and drink. I think they worry that someone will make pot brownies if they do a potluck.

Sweets are doable after work and everybody works. And xmas is the only time of year diet-conscious types allow themselves to make and eat em. I do it myself that way. And its worth it to make multiple batches because chances are you'll be goin to one more party. Sweets last longer in that way, because a casserole or something is a one-shot deal.

At house parties, hostesses feel safest urging sweets or booze so they can count on a spread if they don't feel people might remember or show up on time. If you think about all the people who show up late to things, dessert is the safest thing to ask for if there is an actual hot meal interval that they might have missed.

I'm going to try and see if its cool to bring something savory to this year's xmas family thing. We found a delicious recipe in the paper for roasted root vegetables using chicken stock and prunes and herbs and it came out better than anything we ever tried of that nature.

My sis asked me to bring a green salad for T-day. I brought a beautiful salad with greens, home-made beets, candied pecans, crumbled blue cheese, fancy vinegar vinaigrette etc. Only three people even touched it. They were too busy digging into the comfort foods. So that was a fail.

My ex-brother in law was famous for showing up with an opened package of Fig Newtons.
He's also the same guy that showed up with a 6 pack of beer with 2 gone.

Was it for laughs? I love it if he's just playing the role. I like to ask for ketchup when it's awful to ask for ketchup.

because they're lazy and it's easy.

I mean, I get it if you're with unfamiliar company but we're all friends. Its like, really you're just going to show up with cookies and not try and make an effort?
Nothing wrong with home baked though. I just hate it when someone stops by along the way to Safeway last minute then shows up and grubs on like it was made by their mom or something.

Rolls with it...
In my office, before Hostess went b/k, I used to always sign up for and bring Ho Ho's and Ding Dongs... everyone laughed, everyone made jokes, many even bitched. The funny thing was, they were always gone at the time we cleaned up.

I'm not carrying a half full crockpot of meatballs BACK to the car.

Undetermined
This is so funny. And true. I would bring home made bread and HOME MADE cookies. Somehow, the bread was always gone but cookies usually remained—likely because everyone else brought sweets.

Dude, thats what take out boxes are for. Does no one else like leftovers? I'll eat that all week for lunch. Saves me from cooking.

Yeah, store-bought is just out of the question at xmas-time. The season of giving includes giving of yourself and your time. American xmas is very much a northern European holiday, based on low daily light, bad weather and being "in."

All that baking is a part of the home and hearth deal.

I don't understand people who bring the entire crockpot to work and not just the food.
