I've done some backpacking in the area near your ride--stunning stuff. When planning and riding these areas, do y'all rely on prior knowledge of these places, GPS research, friends' knowledge...?

Usually I'm hanging around looking at a map and then I say to myself, "Ooh! That looks neat-o!" I'll usually do a little internet searching if I've never been there before. Downieville has always been a fairly well-known mountain bike and OHV area, but I was unaware of the stuff to the northeast of it. A few friends had been there a few weeks prior so we followed them around.

I wish I was adept enough to do GPS research, or to borrow someone's tracks, but in reality I'm pretty much a tech-tard. We'll pull it out to figure out where we really are in relation to where we think we are, but that's about it. I really need to broaden my knowledge someday...
