Looks like the MAGA extremists are moving into the airwaves after getting booted off the innarwebs.

Although from my personal experience with ham radio “enthusiasts”, a lot of them probably sympathize with the Capitol insurrectionists.

Perhaps some of the loudest EMCOM waxkers do. I’ve found ham ops to be as varied as the rest of the population.

And just so we are clear, nobody should sympathize with a violent attempt to overthrow our democratic processes. To paint all amateur radio with that brush is pretty offensive.

He was pretty clear that he was operating from his own personal interactions.

The militias do love this shit though.

I've been playing with my Anytone whenever I get bored, lots to learn!
Did you guys end up setting up a BARF DMR talk-group ? :)

KM6MHZ here. Licensed a LOOOOONG time ago, it expired and I didn't recover it soon enough. Licensed again 1/2017, with a little prodding from EastBayDave :)rip).

Was a novice originally, relicensed as a Technician and upgraded to General 7/2017. I'm into DX; SSB and FT8. Have WAS and will have DXCC when some old crotchety fucks from around the planet send me back some QSL cards (well, out of the 6 I sent, I only need 1 back for the award).

Current radios are:

V/UHF: Icom IC-W32a, Alinco DJ500, and the ubiquitous Baofeng UV5-R that lives in my truck, when I drive over it or drop it in the water I don't cry.

HF: Icom IC-725 (my original rig, sits on the shelf in my closet) IC-706Mk2G (mobile rig), and my baby, an Icom IC-7600. I have a crappy antenna that's kind of low, so I can heat it up when necessary. :teeth

That is a great call sign for random luck of the draw :laughing

I'm K1STG, I gave up my old 6 call earlier this year and grabbed this one which used to be my grandfather's call sign from the 1960s. My dad remembers him calling CQ with it. My grandpa also learned Japanese and Russian CW when he was in the Navy in the Pacific during WWII. After the war he got paid to listen for Russian CW and send in anything he heard.

I'm just getting started in HF. I have a Yaesu FT-891 that I am planning on taking portable to do POTA and SOTA. On the HT front I have a Kenwood TH-K20A, Anytone 878, Alinco DJ-G7, and about half a dozen Baofengs of various types.

My SOTABeams antenna should get shipped sometime this week so hopefully I'll be on 20/40M soon.

I usually monitor the HRCC talk group when I am working. It's 31621 on Brandmeister. Mostly because it isn't as constant with the chatter as 91 and 3100.

Also because I am a fan of the Ham Radio Crash Course youtube videos.

I didn't say that or mean that. (Thanks Eldirty!)

There tends to be a lot of crossover in my hobbies (guns, archery, prepping, overlanding) and you tend to see a trend as to the type of people who are attracted to these sort of "self-sufficient" pursuits.

:laughing

I guess I've been frustrated lately with all the people who buy a radio for just in case or emergencies but don't bother getting licensed. How is anyone going to know how to use it when SHTF if they haven't practiced with it under normal circumstances.

It would be like buying a gun for the same reason but never taking it out to the range to practice with it. :laughing

I've learned a lot about my radios over the last couple of weeks just with the silly SOTA activations I've been doing. :p
