Ham Radio Operators

I haven’t broken a Baofeng yet, but I did break my Yeasu :laughing

Good to know. Are they allowed in Mexico?

My pop said that in addition to "better not get caught with firearms," advanced communications and surveillance equipment were also verboten.

WEll, I went ahead and order some Baofeng BF-F8HP. The 8Watt Power Transmission at such a low price was too hard to pass up. We'll see how it goes.

I just now found this old ham radio thread.

I have been a ham since the mid 1960's. Things have changed a lot since then.

These days, I ONLY work HF CW. Quite active, my radio is on now. I enjoy the sound of CW

I work mostly 40 meters during the day and 80M during the night.

Any other "real" hams here? I mean any other CW ops?

You know, I got my license, bought a couple of radios, and haven't really used them since. :laughing

Anyone on DMR? I just bought myself a pi-star hotspot and have it connected up to Brandmeister.

Should we spin up a BARF talkgroup? :laughing

So you're saying that the thought of owning a rig was a fetish? :twofinger :laughing

No, I have a little brother that lives about a mile and a half from me. I got the bug up my ass last year during the Power Outages when everyone was cut off.

No Land Phones, no Cell Phones, no internet, nothing. I'm fine to play my own Police Dept. at my place, but my Mom and little brother down the way being cut off makes me uncomfortable.

I bought a couple of radios, made him get a license with me, and after we got our licenses he had zero interest in learning how to use the radio or practicing so I kind of gave up.

What type of radios and what class license?

Just a basic Tech License and a couple of Baofeng Dual Band F8HP handhelds.

I honestly have no idea how to use them though, the HAMCRAM was useless for learning anything and I didn't want to practice with randos on the air, so I have not even tried to broadcast with them.

Can you make it P-Sink free? :teeth

That kind of seems to be the spirit of amateur radio, but I have heard a few wackos on the repeaters over the years. The joke on DMR is that if you listen to 3100, the nationwide talkgroup, for a few minutes you will know the weather in every corner of the country. :p

Yesterday I came across a website where someone had uploaded a call sign book from 1961 and it had an entry for my grandfather in it. The call sign was available so I snagged it. :)

I am having fun with this little hotspot. I know some people turn their nose up at it because it jumps through the internet but I like that I don’t have to feel guilty tying up someone else’s repeater for hours.

I've got a FT3DR, but haven't messed around too much with DMR.

Been messing around with APRS for location tracking/backcountry communication via SMS/email and the like. Pretty fun stuff. Even snagged a TNC3 from Mobilink to turn one of my Baofeng UV-82s into an APRS device and paired that with an old android phone I have to use with APRSDroid. The set up is cumbersome, but nice to have options.

Currently have my truck in the shop for some work, but thinking I'm going to add a FTM-400XDR when I get it back.

I haven't gotten a chance to work with Yeasu's C4FM yet, is it pretty good?

I'm using a cheap TYT MD380 UHF mono band DMR, but I am thinking about picking up one of these new Anytone radiot that do VHF/UHF both FM and DMR and have APRS capabilities as well. (they will beacon out but won't display nearby beacons though)

Started playing with my radios for the first time today. It is actually easier than I had thought. Hand programming in some of the stuff so I can speak on the local repeaters is taking me a minute. I may have to download CHIRP.

Chirp makes it easier. Especially if you are using a Boafang, those things have a horrific interface. But they are cheap.

Yeah, it isn't bad, but I have no fucking clue what most the settings mean. So, you know. Muddling through.

I haven't bought a radio in years where I didn't buy a Nifty guide to go with it... See if there's one for your radio, they make a huge difference in familiarizing with them. And then again in a year after we all forget how to get through the functions again.
