getting dirty
Hi all,
Just wanted to give you all an update. I was able to make it out to the dirt bike school at supermotoschools.com. It is located in Prairie City dirt track near Sacramento.
There were only a few of us this time out. We had a group of kids and another for adults. Out of the 5 of us, I was the only one with no dirt biking experience at all. That didn't last long though as we hopped on the bikes (150ccs i think) and started learning to turn on the oval. Coming from a road biking background, it was very difficult to unlearn my riding habits. It was hard for me to remember to push the bike under me, stick a leg out, use the rear brake, and *not* use the front.
After lunch, we changed things up and rode on the "TT" course with 4 left runs and one right. We were all picking up the pace, and getting more comfortable on our bikes. And for me, it was all going so well...
Swung the rear out a bit far on entry, locked the rear tire, and panicked. Instead of letting go, I stayed on the brake resulting in a high side. Smacked my head pretty good, but my elbow pad bore the brunt of the impact. I learned the price of allowing fear to take over. A painful lesson, but one I can apply to other parts of my life as well.
It was important for me to get back on the bike. After a break, we did some jumps and some follow the leader. For the last session, I requested that we do the TT course again. I took it easy, but the important part is that I did it.
Brok, the owner/instructor runs a great school. A laid back, relaxed learning style. The facilities and equipment are well maintained and clean. I definitely recommend this to other riders that want to improve their confidence in low traction situations.
I met a couple of guys from Singapore. They were on a two week motorcycle vacation. I think hit up at least two trackdays and a track school before this. They had another supermoto school in Socal the next day. Pretty neat. Even cooler is that their home track is Sepang. I got some connections now when I ride there!
Overall, it felt great to be on the track and riding. I gives me some pride to say that at last, I am starting on this journey.
