I really, really don't enjoy this and these kinds of threads.

But I saw you twice yesterday at rush hour on San Pablo Dam Road. In the morning you wailed by in the bike lane at only about 60 along somewhat moving traffic.

In the afternoon, at about 4:30, you wailed by at about 75 in the bike lane while the rest of us were doing a respectable 50-55. Shit, traffic was moving, what was the point of passing for that? You ain't gonna overheat. And there is a fair bit of debris in that lane if you care about flats.

They give tickets for that. I have gotten one (going about 20 mph!), written by the combined park-water district police in little black and white SUVs. It's about a $320 ticket with traffic school option. They are unreasonable assholes. They "disarmed" me of my pocket knife fercrynoutloud and would have no part of the overheating explanation. They are not motorcyclists. I guess you hope they won't catch you? I want to be open-minded and consider that maybe it IS your strategy but after all, there is the occasional stalled car and actual bicyclist though not often in the morning commute. Lately EBMUD dumptrucks have been kind of aggressive so watch out for them too. It's been my commute for 16 years, if that gives perspective.

Because you are driving so fast, you are probably going to cause a crackdown or worse, resulting in tickets for those of us who are a lot more careful about only using that lane when we cannot visibly see the cops. I mean, that's my strategy.

They hit the road every morning at about 7:30 to get coffee in Orinda. It's fairly predictable. Then I see them sometimes around 4:30 maybe finishing or changing shifts. Try and avoid those intervals. And when you get into Orinda, in the morning, it's a goddam school fercrissakes, with actual kids and parents and bicycles. And cops. Or maybe you are turning up the hill into Tilden not sure.

Slow the roll, please..you are just pissing people off for not a good reason. Really bad PR for us. The afternoon one was the really bad one, to me. Just no point. You have some company in the morning, like guy on cafe bmw or whatever though they go slower.

Hmm. Okay.. I hate when that happens.:laughing

I don't think there is a subtext. I am being very clear. I want to keep being a similar scofflaw but I can't if people in cars actually start complaining or the cops get mad because he made them look foolish. It's not a freeway, not a straightaway with good visibility. It was actually pretty dangerous, the afternoon run.

I am just as likely to get a ticket if the Broken Lizard guys SEE me, or moreso because I don't ride that fast. But we are both less likely if that rider is a bit more judicious and doesn't draw attention. I ain't asking him (?) to stop using it, just not so damn fast that he pisses people off. Most motorists really don't care in my opinion, But they do care when it's that aggressive and dangerous..

I'd be willing to bet I know this guy. He lives about 4 houses up the street from where I used to live in Pinole. I've seen him doing the same thing on SPD road a couple of tiMes and I went and talked to his parent about his funeral. He is a pretty talented rider, having ridden dirt bikes since he was a kid. But he is a dumbshit and will eventually run out of talent.

He knows it. He isn't on BARF. He's a dumbass.

What do you mean thanks for not wholesalely rejecting the premise?

I have a similar idiot that lives across the street from me here. He has a clapped out GSXR with no fairings. He winds the things up and makes a god awful racket with it. Then he rides it one mile down the road in first gear, pinning it the whole way. Turns around at the stop sign and comes back. I don't think he knows how to shift.

His (our) next door neighbor is a local sheriff's deputy. I went over and talked to the dumbshit and sauid I also ride. And I also can ride like an asshole. But that I usually ride mellow for a mile ro so, then go full asshole. And I asked if he would be so kind as to do the same so he doesn't make everyone think his dumbass is mine.

He didn't listen to a word I had to say. Dude never rides in anything but shorts, a t-shirt and a helmet. Takes his little kid (maybe 3) for a ride up the street, no gear. Eventually he'll learn. But it won't be because I talked to him. It will be because a big truck's bumper talked to him.

Oh, I just mean that there is a gray area of understanding between people here who want to ride their bikes the way they want and my, perhaps, pedestrian request. I don't know what the consensus is. You figure the continuum goes from a geezer like me all the way to a 1%er.

I never really do know where people stand regarding the extra-legal of motorcycling. Messes with freedom and all that stuff.

Gotcha. I understand. POn one hand I like to ride like a jackass. On the other, I am always baffled by the mentality that laws don't apply to us. People seem to think it's ok to run highbeams at night, have loud exhausts, ride like assholes, etc, just because WE ARE MOTORCYCLISTS, HEAR US ROAR.

I guess what separates me and you from the morons is that we will deal with the consequences of our actions, whereas we have seen no end of "Why should I have to pay this speeding ticket? I was only going 165 in the bike lane."

Putting others at risk is something that separates responsible hooligans from irresponsible ones.

Certainly those speeds put others at risk given the circumstances.

Not only does it put others at risk, it adds to a bad image for riders.

It's possible that BA (OP)'s ticket was the result of a young jackass like that creating complaints followed by hard enforcement on people who are much more reasonable in their riding.

A week ago had a guy splitting 50+ when traffic was basically stopped.

Saw him a few miles down the road nursing a broken leg

That rare refined moment of instant karma.

Years ago, the ex and I were about to go into a restaurant and pedestrian was crossing the street. A hotrod guy went zipping by scaring said person shitless.

Johnny CHP was sitting right there. It was a beautiful thing.

Yesterday in my truck on 101 going around 15 mph. 2 bikes come splitting by doing an estimated 55+ I just don't understand the thinking. One tiny wrong move by them or a car and they are in the ICU.

Mad
