OP,
I've had just a few in the last 10 years or so. Sold my VFR to help pay for my final year of a second bachelors degree. Had no bike and was essentially homeless for a stretch, trying to make it through... Sad to see it go, but I MADE it through that tough stretch, and here we are a handful of years later about to finish my PhD and head back into the work force. Of course, getting into my PhD program meant I had a paycheck once more, and I bought the DR350 I still own.
The second break for me just occurred. In the summer of 2017, I rode a Ninja 250 across the USA... Almost 8k miles in 30 days. That fall, I highway commuted on the bike, and then sold it. Really stopped enjoying it.
Instead, in Fall 2017 / Spring 2018, I did a LOT of off road riding... and really, really enjoyed that. In April of last year, I seriously got into mountain biking. It was everything I loved from off road riding, but way more fun on the downhill sections. When the bike weighs 1/10th that of the moto, you can really fly between the trees. I love it. My DR350 has sat untouched for about 1.5 years.
I rode the hell out of my mountain bike this summer while living in Albuquerque, including some chair lift bike park riding at Angel Fire in northern New Mexico. But... the itch really started to come back to me. I wanted to get back on a moto.
I was given a CBR250R... Wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but decided to spin it into a little commuter and infrequent twisties bike for western NC. Rolled up to the first stop sign, and felt the flutter of wind through my perfed jacket up and around my neck... it felt so good, and so damned natural. I had been missing that feeling, and it really hit me at that point. Took it to the mountains a couple days ago, and had a GREAT time. Man that chassis is so much better than the old Ninja 250 :laughing Been off the street for over a year, but was out knee dragging and just having a great time.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to spending some more time on the CBR, as well as getting the DR350 refreshed and back into the dirt.
Long story, sorry :laughing
My advice?
Commuting daily kills motivation to ride. It's a total fun sucker. Stop doing it.
Do something DIFFERENT. The suggestions to buy a small dual sport and ride off road are fantastic. If you've never done it, it's more fun than you could ever imagine. It opens up a totally different area of riding that'll make you fall in love all over again... and California (and the western USA in general) has some amazing riding.
Do something fresh like that, and it'll help you remember why you ride.
