Pete-

Come over to my house and have some bar b q and a beer. I will let you take out my ZRX1200- that will reignite the fire inside of you!!!!

(Honestly- I barely ride anymore myself, but I don't want to part with my beautiful bike)

It's the bike, trust me. I'm working on moving back to something more ideal for long-distance and overnight trips in general. Most likely it'll be a GS.

OP,

I've had just a few in the last 10 years or so. Sold my VFR to help pay for my final year of a second bachelors degree. Had no bike and was essentially homeless for a stretch, trying to make it through... Sad to see it go, but I MADE it through that tough stretch, and here we are a handful of years later about to finish my PhD and head back into the work force. Of course, getting into my PhD program meant I had a paycheck once more, and I bought the DR350 I still own.

The second break for me just occurred. In the summer of 2017, I rode a Ninja 250 across the USA... Almost 8k miles in 30 days. That fall, I highway commuted on the bike, and then sold it. Really stopped enjoying it.

Instead, in Fall 2017 / Spring 2018, I did a LOT of off road riding... and really, really enjoyed that. In April of last year, I seriously got into mountain biking. It was everything I loved from off road riding, but way more fun on the downhill sections. When the bike weighs 1/10th that of the moto, you can really fly between the trees. I love it. My DR350 has sat untouched for about 1.5 years.

I rode the hell out of my mountain bike this summer while living in Albuquerque, including some chair lift bike park riding at Angel Fire in northern New Mexico. But... the itch really started to come back to me. I wanted to get back on a moto.

I was given a CBR250R... Wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but decided to spin it into a little commuter and infrequent twisties bike for western NC. Rolled up to the first stop sign, and felt the flutter of wind through my perfed jacket up and around my neck... it felt so good, and so damned natural. I had been missing that feeling, and it really hit me at that point. Took it to the mountains a couple days ago, and had a GREAT time. Man that chassis is so much better than the old Ninja 250 :laughing Been off the street for over a year, but was out knee dragging and just having a great time.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to spending some more time on the CBR, as well as getting the DR350 refreshed and back into the dirt.

Long story, sorry :laughing

My advice?

Commuting daily kills motivation to ride. It's a total fun sucker. Stop doing it.

Do something DIFFERENT. The suggestions to buy a small dual sport and ride off road are fantastic. If you've never done it, it's more fun than you could ever imagine. It opens up a totally different area of riding that'll make you fall in love all over again... and California (and the western USA in general) has some amazing riding.

Do something fresh like that, and it'll help you remember why you ride.

When my MS got the best of me I gave up riding for about four years, then I saw a moped sized motorcycle and thought, I could ride that. Now, thanks to not giving up and a lot of physical therapy, I'm riding a new Guzzi V7 and quite happy about it.

I cut back to riding very little when I got seriously ill 3 yrs. ago (7 heart attacks, COPD, CHF, etc.) Then when they had to amputate my foot/leg up to the shin, I had to stop completely.

However, I am keeping a slim hope alive by keeping the bike charged up undercover in the garage & not selling my gear. Despite everyone in the family wanting me to sell, I'm hanging onto it, just in case I become more mobile again someday...

IF they wanna sell it after I'm gone, so be it. :teeth

The wife and I have our first kid on the way and I am seriously thinking about hanging up the helmet. :nchantr

Normally on a weekend morning I'm up early and riding into the hills for my fix...this past few months though I have been favoring spirited drives over rides. Guess I am feeling the weight of responsibility and subconsciously managing risk! :afm199

Look out for a very well setup FZ-09 coming to a classifieds section near you!

There’s a thread for this ( Hawaii BARF anyone) ?
Anyone with a computer willing to link :teeth
Plans are for mid February to early March when the rains here are at full suck.
It’s the kind of trip that makes you want to come home and ride some more. :)

No clue yet if I could get that time off but I might look into it.

Sounds fun. Ridden bikes in Oahu. But that was just between downtown and some of the suburbs (if we can call them that)

I mean total break. Sell the bike(s), all your gear, etc.

I still enjoy riding I just feel like I barely have or make the time to ride purely for pleasure these days. I have a 2015 FZ09 that I’ve put about 14,000 miles on and probably 90% of that is commuting. My previous bikes I would have put that many miles on in a single year let alone multiple years.

Seriously considering just selling it, donating / selling my gear, and freeing up the closet space. I can always buy another bike down the road if I change my mind.

I don't ride these days (and it's shameful how little miles I have on my most recent (cough 2015 cough) bike) ... time and my health prohibit doing so. I'm going to sell my bike but keep the gear. I figure there's always the possibility that I will ride again someday (not all that likely) or be a passenger.

Sold every bike I owned, and every single spare part in late 2014 when I started up my business since I was 'self financing'. Swore it was only temporary and I'd have another bike before 2015 was out.

Four motorcycle-free years went by before I bought the Guzzi Centauro off of Charles to use as a get-around while I was swapping the transmission in my truck.

I hated everything about the Guzzi and it nearly killed any desire I had to ride at all.

Bought the salvage title K2 GSXR-1000 here on BARF last year, and spent quite a bit of time doing a restoration. And I absolutely love to ride it. It wasn't simply riding that I missed, it was riding on a bike that fit me well and I actually gave two shits about.

I don't ride nearly as much as I used to... Honestly during the week I commute on a bicycle to keep the Old and Fat in check. But I do still ride, and actually have a good time when I take the Old Man out for the occasional spin through the hills.

Holy shit, Moike... Used to really enjoy reading about all of your sidecar racing. I saw that fire sale and was worried, but I'm glad to see you back on two wheels.
