Anyone ever take breaks from riding?

I mean total break. Sell the bike(s), all your gear, etc.

I still enjoy riding I just feel like I barely have or make the time to ride purely for pleasure these days. I have a 2015 FZ09 that I’ve put about 14,000 miles on and probably 90% of that is commuting. My previous bikes I would have put that many miles on in a single year let alone multiple years.

Seriously considering just selling it, donating / selling my gear, and freeing up the closet space. I can always buy another bike down the road if I change my mind.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
I quit riding on the street

Just got too complacent, picked up bad habits, found myself letting my guard down.

Took a break, got a little CRF250L , toned it down

Too many good memories with teh BARF, the rides, the camp outs, the races to let it all go .

Eh risk doesn’t even weigh into it for me. Just busy all the time and I find that more often than not I have more need for the cage to carry golf clubs, surfboard, snowboards, whatever. I might ride to a dinner or something nearby just so I don’t have to worry about parking.

I have taken breaks from riding due to crashing, surgeries, work and mechanicals.

Never because I just felt like it.

Too much lean angle...
Commuting will make you hate riding. I even lost interest in sport riding but it was rejuvenated by the more engaging experience of a direct drive electric drivetrain. Nothing out there is really worth the price now, but the 20 kWh Energicas and 2021 electric Ducati will be out soon and I expect they will sell very well here in the Bay Area.

Completely agree. I used to commute on the bike and never wanted to ride for fun anymore.

I haven't had a bike for a few years, but been finding myself thinking about another lately.

Not been on my bike in about 7 months, after breaking my foot and 3 toes..at the minute I don’t feel like riding a bike I’ve had worst crashes,I’ll just keep it ready to ride ..I do miss it

I would listen to that voice inside you - it is seldom wrong.
I don't know your situation and I don't know who you are.
I quit riding for almost twenty years - even convinced myself that I didn't need it.
It was the right decision, given my circumstances.

Now? I think they will burry me with a bike.

Listen to your heart - you can always get another bike and new gear.

I don't ride much anymore too, Pete. But I think it's because after that last trip to Hawthorne last year, I determined that the NineT is absolutely not the bike for me anymore. I'm virtually on the verge of hating it and every time I've ridden since that trip has further solidified my disdain for the motorcycle. It's beautiful, yes. It still draws my eye...but riding it just sucks.

Long story short, perhaps you're just not interested in riding because what you have in the garage doesn't really work for you and/or stir your riding interest. Perhaps explore that. :dunno

Like everyone said, listen to your gut feeling. I will say, though mm.if you still feel like riding but you're just missing that pure essence of it...go get a Royal Enfield classic or bullet. One of those single cylinder bikes that have ZERO features will bring back for you what motorcycles are all about...pure enjoyment. Not fast and extremely simple to work on, but make you smile non stop at how much fun it is to ride

I had to stop for about 8 months due to travel mixed with an overuse injury. It was terrible and I thought about riding constantly. I agree commuting as riding takes the fun away. I did that for 20 months or so and it was definitely the time where I was least interested in riding.

My break wasn't total like you describe. But I have known several people to do that and some came back, others didn't. I don't recall anyone regretting doing that. At the point they missed it enough they got back into it. Simple as that.

I've never completely stopped. But I realized I no longer have that feeling of excitement I remember like the first time I set out for Lake Tahoe on a CB350 when I started riding. The Big Adventure thrill. I do miss that feeling. My son quit riding from 13 to 15. But is now back into it.
Everyone has different reasons to ride. If you're not feeling it and can't commit 100% to the requirements, I'd stop.

I’m on my 6th week without my bike... probably rain the first day I get it back.

:(
Ouch!
That right there is the difference between the moto industry and mine. I would've flipped you the keys to a loaner the the day you dropped it off.
Six weeks, though....sounds extreme.

As far as the thread subject goes, the only time I've taken away from riding was when I ended up in the ICU for several weeks. with a ruptured appendix. That was hardly voluntary.

When Ca broke my heart with the helmet law, I started building a CJ 5. Started collecting the V8 power train.
I figured no top and windshield down was gonna get me some wind.
I pretty much gave away my XL 600R.
That lasted 2 years, I bought a R/100 with a little rod knock.
Never got that jeep running on the V8, sold it stock
