AMA members check in - why you should join

This is a serious question and NOT intended to stir up controversy.

Where are the AMA's priorities?

I will admit to having never joined the AMA. It seems to me that the AMA's top priority has been preventing / repealing helmet laws. This may be completely wrong, but that's been my perception (we all know perception and reality can be far apart).

I'd really like to see the AMA do some serious research around the concept of lane sharing / filtering. If the results warrant it, I'd like to see the AMA advocate for lane sharing / filtering as a national standard.

I'd like to see the AMA really push for DRIVER education.

I'd like to see the AMA REALLY push for rider education.

Honestly, I'd like to see the AMA push for tighter enforcement of licensing laws (despite pressure from the manufacturers).

Thoughts?

I wonder how much money I would have saved by just going lifer. I know I must be late a lot with payments, because my card says I am only a member since 06. :laughing I think that is when I started the Hall of Fame extra support, but then again ......

Oh, my card says "Hall of Fame" on it. Yeah, baby! :twofinger

The free magazine they send details ALL of the things they fight against/for and also keep you informed on just about every law, policy etc related to motorcycle through the entire country.

They were huge in repealing the lead law for child dirtbikes as one recent example.

I agree about sharing/filtering, but you'd be surprised at how many riders elsewhere in the country think it is a terrible practice. I really do wish they would do more research though.

They urge people to wear helmets by the way, I think that perception is because they honestly fight against anything that is an additional law placed on motorcyclists. The helmet thing just happens to be an easy target because it sounds so stupid to say they fight it.

Whoop! In your honor:
In 1971, Mann became the first rider to complete motorcycle racing’s Grand Slam, winning in all forms of AMA Grand National Championship racing: mile, half-mile, short track, TT and road racing.

Mann says the hoopla about the Grand Slam didn’t start until months after he’d completed it.

This one is hitting California right now.. bs that the AMA and others are kicking ass on!! :thumbup

Pismo, Calif.: A California appeals court has rejected a request by the Sierra Club to ban Off Highway Vehicle use on a county-owned parcel in Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. A state Court of Appeals upheld a San Luis Obispo Superior Court decision that it is too late to review a coastal development permit issued in 1982 that allows off-highway vehicles on a 584-acre, county-owned parcel, called the La Grande Tract, within the park.
The Sierra Club had sued State Parks, arguing that the La Grande Tract is classified as a buffer area by San Luis Obispo County’s local coastal plan and is, therefore, a nonvehicle area. Both courts ruled that State Parks is under no obligation to amend its general development plan to reflect the designation.
The Sierra Club was ordered to pay the costs of the appeal and is barred from further litigation over the 1982 permit. The lawsuit was the latest move in the club’s efforts to curtail off-road riding in the park. The court noted that the Coastal Commission and county have closely monitored activities in the park for more than 20 years.

And they also discourage absurdly loud exhausts, too. Which I greatly appreciate.
