Adding Teen to Insurance

"You want to drive, you need a job. You're going to need some 'in case shit'. That way, in case some shit happens when you're driving, me and your mom won't be in the poor house."

My son is getting close to driving age. I'm already preparing him. He's going to get to that age real quick where he's old enough to drive and taking him places will no longer be an option for him.

When I was a kid I started driving right at 16 with a beater of a mid 70's diesel Mercedes (240d) from my dad. They set me up on my own policy so I didn't affect their rates and told me it was mine to drive if I paid for all the expenses. I only worked 12-16 hrs/wk to afford the insurance and fuel and I still had some spending money left over, and this was at minimum wage ($4/hr). I was told the alternative was to ride my bike and be thankful I had a bicycle to ride to school and it was only 4 miles away, my other choice was spending an hour each way on the school bus. My stop was the first in morning and last in the evening. My minimum liability coverage on that car was about $120/ month.
The hours had zero impact on school (grades) even in what we called AP classes back then and a few course at the local city college my Jr and Sr years. I had a good social life and GF all through high school, the job didn't hurt any of it.
To be clear, my parents paid for all the normal expense of being their kid, food, clothes, a modest allowance as part of doing extra chores, etc. The job was for the extras that we should consider privileges.
