Adding Teen to Insurance

Our kid has his permit and we are ready for him to start driving us around.

But holy shit I had no idea it would more than double our insurance. Is that normal? We have 4 cars fully covered. Apparently Progressive doesn't allow us to just add him to one or two vehicles (not the nice ones).

Do we just have to bite the bullet and pay? Is there a cheaper company that we could get his own policy on? Just insuring him would cost more than any car payment I ever had before earlier this year when we bought our first nice car.

Edit: He has good grades but I doubt that discount will make much of a dent.

Time to shop for other insurance. But yes it will go up with a new teenage driver.

Yow.
Insurance is weird. Insurance is a racket. Shop around.
I have only liability, because at the cost of more coverage, I can just pay out of pocket.

Fortunately I seem to have been able to avoid hitting things. I think directed momentum is key. Or luck.

Luck to you in your quest.

Edit... my parents always made me pay the additional premuim for my coverage. I got to drive my dad’s ‘66 Cadillac Deville convertible. Pretty sweet ride. Apparently I broke the engine mounts doing burn outs.

You may call your agent and ask what A liability only Policy will cost on a $1500 beater with your teen listed as an excluded driver on your other vehicles.

I was dreading this and was shocked when it cost nothing extra to add my son. My agent said it was because he only had a permit.

KHAAAAAN!
Former Farmers and State Farm agent here.....

OP, get a $1 mill or $2 mill umbrella policy ASAP. Shouldn't cost you more than $150-250/year. This will go beyond your auto and home/renters insurance liability if you were to get sued because your teenager slammed into a van full of Korean Baptists on their way to Jazz Camp for example.

And apparently, my insurance (other Co) also cannot add a driver ~only~ to one vehicle. hmm. While typing this I think I heard them say "needs to be either excluded or included from another vehicle".

Ok well it looks like I have some time because CA law seems to allow permitees to just coast on the parents’ insurance.

I’ll look into that umbrella policy although the way settlements go $1-2M won’t mean shit for the families of the Korean church band.

I used to work at Farmer's regional office way back in the day.
Nothing is more expensive to insure than a 16-19 year old guy.
Good student discounts help.
Way back when, Farmers didn't allow you to pick which vehicle they drove- they were placed on the highest dollar vehicle you owned.
FWIW, when I started driving, my parents made me pay the delta between what it was and what it became, as well as the vehicle maintenance.
Thank God for auto shop!

All this reminds me of a buddy's younger sister back in the day (no, I didn't... and she was kinda...). She drove a Dodge Neon and got in a wreck by rear ending another car. Her Dodge was in the shop for 2-3 weeks getting fixed. Less then a week after getting it back she crashed into a parked car :wow

Just thanks a lot. Girl unit A and Girl Unit B both turned sixteen and are going to get their permits this week I think after they do the driving portion of their class.

Maybe a second job is in the future for me. :(

Oof. Well, if it's any consolation, girls 16-19 are still less expensive than guys the same age... and, if I recall correctly, less than guys 19-23...

Maybe they need to get jobs, and pitch in to cover the extra costs? That's what my Dad made me and my brother do... seemed fair to us... :dunno

Thanks for the tips everyone.

My parents never made me pay for my insurance until I was 18 and working instead of going to school. He’s a really good kid and I don’t want him to have to get a job that will distract him from school. I think he could pull his weight in other ways by adding to his household chores and duties.

Since we have 4 cars I think it might be good to split them off into 2 policies so we’d still get multi-car discounts for both but only have him on the one with the beaters. And we’ll sign him up for a defensive driving course.

If the beaters are too old you won't get multi-car at least that is what my insurance did to me. I really do need to check around and see if I can get a better deal somewhere else. I hear Costco has pretty good rates.
