What did you do to your dirty bike today?

Okay, this was yesterday, but I was too tired when I got back to get the photos off of my phone and write something.

Crash tested the XR - again. It held up well and was way easier to pick up than the 790R. This was not all that difficult of an uphill section, but I hit a rock wrong, got off my line, stopped forward motion and dumped it. I didn't manage to get off while still standing like I usually do.

Removed a link from the chain (after swapping back to 13T front sprocket mid-weekend) and installed a new chain guide.

IMG_20200408_162509361-XL.jpg

RIP stock chain guide.

IMG_20200408_162533830-XL.jpg

Note how the bent stock guide wore the bling off the new sprocket.

Installed new rear wheel collars/spacers. The right one was pretty worn and its dust cover was missing for some strange reason.

Removed the power valve linkage cover and un-fucked the gasket. I recently learned that gasket is self-adhesive with an adhesive backing you need to peel off. Motherfucker! Checked the torque on the cylinder nuts while I was there.

Tried to kludge a fix for my stripped brake pedal threads. Went to the hardware store and auto parts store and ended up ordering a thread fixer kit from RMATV.

NICE! Looks even better wet. Are those the forks I gave you? Stock they were aluminum and chrome regulars; the black looks great with the street tires. Better just walk in to the local PoPo and hand them your license and get it over with : )

Too bad for this SiP, haven't ridden it this way yet... :(
Yea the black really pops! Thank you on those forks, it needed those! (Almost hate the 'old' dirt rear rim :laughing)

Looking good D. Spoke up a black rear wheel to finish it.

I wish I had a skid plate that protected my pipe like yours. I have pushed the expansion chamber up into the right radiator twice recently turning it into a parallelogram :( I wrapped the chamber with a wide strap and pinned it to the ground with a car and lifted the bike with a forklift to bend it back. That is what I have done to my dirt bike lately. :)

I ordered a Wrench Rabbit complete engine rebuild kit for the RM. She has been good to me. It's time to return the favor.

:party :thumbup No piston, head, or cylinder pictures? How are we going to debate your jetting, hours, or ring and air filter maintenance schedule if we don't have pics? I don't know about anybody else, but I feel cheated! :laughing :twofinger

I finally got around to tearing down the XR forks Yesterday from Baja and ordered new OEM bushings and seal kit. Need to stop being lazy and start knocking off projects.... like I don't lack them. :x

I sent my cylinder to Millennium Technologies to be recoated.

My cylinder went to PowerSeal yesterday by way of Thumper Racing, who is rebuilding my crank.

Today I sent my Scotts damper off for a rebuild and tried to source engine bearings locally.

IMG_20200506_154843502-L.jpg

Two of the transmission bearings were bad, the 6004 (open, output shaft right) and 6004RUD (single sealed, input shaft left). Must have been the WalMart oil!

I've been doing so much I'm not going to hijack this thread. I might start a "complete YZ250 rebuild" thread.

Inspired by TwoStrokeYardSale I tore down my spare YZ250 motor in preparation for swapping out 3rd-5th WR450F gears I've had sitting in the workshop for over a year and make a parts list. Will complete my YZ250 to YZ250X conversion.

As the crank and cylinder are near perfect, looks like I just need to order top end gaskets, piston kit, and main seals. Not often you open up a motor and need less than expecting or prepared for. :thumbup

Also my hour meter's display seems to have gone wacky and no longer reads the hours. Will add a new one to the parts list I guess.

Did you have any rust on your crank?

I read Motul 800 will cause rust, and I used it for the first couple years when I also tracked my TZ250.

It probably doesn't help that I let my bike sit all summer. Maybe I should pour some oil in the crankcase and push it in gear before storing it.

On the other hand, it was just cosmetic surface rust that didn't affect anything.

? Did you find this with your motors? I've run that for years, now mostly run the 710. Don't think I've had one of those motors apart to the crank to look for rust. Is it hydroscopic or something?

No, zero rust and this motor is a spare that has been sitting for years. Never heard that about Motul. Can you elaborate about the why, interesting. I use inexpensive BelRay SL-2 semi-synthetic for its low flashpoint as I ride my bike like a 90 year old grandma.

I, too, used Motul 800 then 710. I don't think anything else has ever been in my bike. If there was an oil that for sure stopped or lessened the spooge, I'd be all over it.

The rust was just something I read on the interwebs. I've also read some really stupid shit, like this last night while researching taller gearing:

change around your gear ratios and you could pump out some more power. But doing so remember that your bike is only meant to have 5 gears and if you supe it up to make it run like it has 6 gears you might have to re-jet.

As far as the gearing, I think I'm going to do 5th gear only. $70ish for the gears and $20ish for the circlips. JFC, Yamaha, can we get affordable Tusk or Pro-X circlips or something?

I replaced the clutch cable on my CR250R with one from MotionPro which I found was much better than stock. There is an additional protective sleeve which I really liked too.

Swapped out 3rd, 4th, 5th gears in my YZ250 transmission with WR450F wheels and pinions. Will now have the same wider and taller transmission gearing as the offroad specific YZ250X in my YZ250. :teeth

No more winding out in 5th gear as fourstrokes take off in the open.

Need to order a new piston and some main seals, then this motor will be ready to go. :ride

I ordered 5th only for my 13/51. What final sprockets do you run?
