Where have all the motorcycle listings gone?

My bud just got stung on CL.

Bought a fully modded Tundra 4 x4

54k miles turned into 145k miles when he went to register it. Original owner phone number changed and gone.

They need to do some verification if they are going to charge $$.

He was shocked. A deal that seemed great so he paid cash went sideways.

That's terrible.

That's why it is SO important to verify VIN numbers, mileage, and spend that extra cash to get a detail vehicle report. I also go the extra mile and print up a thorough bill of sale. I know someone who goes as far as taking a picture of the seller holding their ID next to their face. You just gotta cover your ass nowadays, more now, than ever.

  1. Make up a name.
  2. Register a new email account with gmail.
  3. Create FB account.
  4. Search Marketplace.

FYI Gmail requires a phone number to set up an account. There are plenty of other free email services that don't, like protonmail.

That seems smart.

I am not buying shit off Craig’s list unless it is a known entity.
Now he has filled out paperwork with the DMV acknowledging the mileage was bogus so whenever he sells it, it will be legit.

SBR is good too. There is considerable risk in buying and selling with the unwashed public.

BookFace is scary. To me.

Edit.. we have a really good local market, so we are fortunate to not have to do crazy stuff. Usually.

What's SBR if you don't mind?

I always grab a picture of the sellers drivers license.
If you're spending real money, you have to do due diligence.
Some folks learn the hard way.

It's a "competing" forum with a lot less going on and just barely worth visiting. I still check in there about once a week.

BARF, being as great as it is, doesn't mind references to other forums because we know this is the best one. :x I got "banned for life" from ducatimonster.com for pointing to another forum. :laughing

I thought one of the reasons there were fewer Craigslist ads is because they now charge for them. It's a small amount, but not free.

It was $5 to sell my last bike. Not significant, but enough to get me to think to make sure I had all the right details for an effective sale.

The $5 didn't however save me from the onslaught of tire kickers and looky-loos who had no intention of buying the bike.

They need a buyer’s fee, not a seller’s fee. :laughing

I always figure that at least 50% of the people that I encounter through Craigslist - buyer and sellers - are going to be flakes. But it worked for two bikes that I've sold in the past ten years when BARF ads got no interest at all. For other bike sales I managed to find someone looking for what I had and worked it out with no advertising. It should be a long time before I need to sell another bike.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine except with a Tacoma. Dash said 150k, actually had 250k.

I was going to sell my WR250x and R6 on craigslist until I ran into the $5 paywall. I'm not above paying $5 to list it but I don't trust CL run my ad and let me KEEP running it until I sell my bike. So I just listed on here and FB. Both bikes were sold via BARF.

Half tempted to trade mine in instead of selling, because the selling efforts are just giving me crickets. Here, CL, and FB and no interest, and don't mind paying the $5 on CL, but really don't want to if it is month after month.

Gary856

Are we having fun yet?
$5/month is nothing to advertise a bike for sale to a big audience. It also makes many sellers (like me, currently) do a reality check on the asking price - do I want to hold out longer at a higher price, or lower it for a quick sale?

Scammers have nothing to do with CL, which is merely a platform; it's always up to the buyer/seller to do due diligence.

Paywall?!?:rolleyes I thought I was thrifty but guess I'm a big spender. I don't expect advertising on a wide reaching platform be free. $5 to list is the cost of doing business (so just ad $5 to your selling price :laughing). I also don't expect CL run the indefinitely. If my listing doesn't sell then the price maybe too high. I have done many transactions via CL and never had an issue. The one plus I see to FB besides being free for local transactions is you can checkout the other party's profile for whatever that's worth.

When I was listing my bikes, there was NO language on CL about whether $5 was for the length of the post (7-10 days) or if it was the length of time to sell (1-many days). But yea, tossing money away for 0 additional value is too thrifty! $5 to go on CL or free to list on BARF/FB/etc.... why spend the $5? If you're in the Bay, CL doesn't offer much over BARF for selling bikes unless you're trying to get a premium on it

Do you know if there are additional charges to renew the listing? While I don't mind putting up the initial fee, it would be a pain paying more during a season known for difficult sales.

I personally find BARF to be a bit limited if you're in to metric cruisers. Sure, if you're looking for anything with "sport" or X/dirt in the name, i.e. Sport bike, Sport Tourer, Dual Sport, Super Sport, SuperMoto/Motard [starts life with an x but might as well be Sport] and Moto X. Not a lot of metric cruisers though. I've been looking for a Roadstar, Roadliner or Stratoliner. Hell, I might even consider a Valkyrie. I've done the sport bikes; my knees, wrists, and driving record are all much happier now that I've moved on to old mans bikes. Besides, I can still carve up the twisties no problem, but I'm done with speed, TYVM. Just sayin.

Whatever that means
What i wanna know is where did all the deals go!?

you used to be able to find crf250's for 2k no problem and Drz400sm for around 3k
