As a species we can do some pretty amazing things when we want to. We landed an SUV on another planet using a rocket powered sky crane.

I don't know why, but I still find their size to be the most shocking thing about Curiosity and Perseverance. Sojourner was so little and cute. I guess my mind just expects the rest to be Wall-E sized. But nah... HUGE.

I love the ingenuity of getting these rovers to land on mars. The whole thing sounds like if they fielded crazy ideas from a bunch of kids and somehow made it work :laughing. The Sojourner rover was surrounded w airbags. Today's it's the whole transformer-y thing: self steering capsule+parachute, then a self steering sky crane+rover combo. :thumbup

And don't forget "Ingenuity" that they are supposed to test tomorrow. The "Mars Helicopter" sounds like a fun test.

I heard them say they had to spin props extra fast due to gravity and atmospheric differences. Will be neat to see if calculations are on point with that little guy too.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that not only did scientists fly the thing 120 million miles, they put it on the surface of Mars by fucking hovering the lander and lowering the rover sky-crane style.

I really appreciate engineering in all it’s forms. I may not like all the outcomes of the engineering but 95% of that work is pretty solid for the good of humans.
