Struggling to find a second job

I'm having a hard time getting a second job. I've applied at several places that are looking for part time and/or seasonal help. Just an entry level position doing almost anything. I never hear back from any of them, nothing at all. I realize it's difficult to find a night and weekend job, but to not hear back from any of them seems odd. I've been at my current job for 20 years, so it's not like I'm bouncing from place to place. Anyone have advice or experience in this situation? Am I failing the 100 question personality test that all places seem to have when you apply online? :laughing

You are too old

I'll expand. I want to hire an entry level person. I want someone with minimal to no experience. You have 20+ years of experience.

It's not worth the likely additional energy I will have to spend to discuss your "experience".

Ask me about my B-1-D
also, seasonal.
Holidays are when the part time job availability expands,
post-holiday it contracts

The big home improvement stores are looking for spring help for outdoor departments. I guess a lot of people are hoping to get paid to water plants:p

its the nature of the beast, they will show having a bunch of positions and get 3000 applicants for 2 slots. took me 6 months to land the regular full time job i have now and i too am looking for a part time nights weekends gig but here you need sheriffs cards for damned near everything and guess whos only open in a 24hour town 8-5?
also if you dont know someone that works where you are applying forget about them even seeing your app and even more so if you have to fill out those hr questionaires that have fuck all to do with the job and you pass only if you have the right number of "correct" answers on it.
and fuck you if youre over 25

Why fuck me if im over 25, i dont get the age stance

Im 32 worked at my job since 2007, wouldn't mind a 2nd PT job right now to help fund moto racing this year.

Why are you guys judging behind peoples ages? If you see me in person, you'll think im 25 :teeth

Also my gf just lost her job, and lucky for her picked up a part time gig quickly, so I was already thinking about taking the 2nd night job seriously.

I was gonna suggest lyft or uber...but then I google'd Penn Valley. I thought independence was part of the allure of isolation? Hard to get someone else to give you their money when there aren't many people giving it to them in the first place. Got a hobby you can monetize? Ability to exploit something on the internet? Join some clubs or organizations in the area and make friends who need regular labor? Learn a skill by interning for free?

Also, what's the current employment market in your area? No way someone is going to hire a candidate with a "limited" schedule when there are plenty of other applicants with 100% availability.

this...

OP, if youre looking for something really basic that pays min wage or a lil more this will work for you. I did this for a year or so before I got married to offset some expenses. I applied at numerous HD for their Lot position. This is the bottom of the barrel for sure. I loved it because it let me have some "freedom" while there, while the cashiers had to stay planted in one spot I was able to roam. I also enjoyed the social side of it and helping people out. HD seems to be an ok company to work for. I got a discount on my cell phone as well.

If youre a breathing, functioning adult they will try and move you inside to a department that needs help. I turned down a few of this requests because it would of made my time there less enjoyable for what I was looking for

:dunno Data entry / other simple online stuff? Plenty of places will pay a bit more than minimum wage for simple typing / transcribing stuff. Boring but easy and you can do it on your own time from home.

I think the people from the bay are going to have a hard time with truly useful input. His nearest HD is over 1/2 hr away...with the second being an hour away...Where have you been applying online? It would seem to me you're going to really need to up your networking skills to not majorly cut into your time with commute to a part time job that might negate any potential benefit. If you're looking for nights, are there late night food options or security needs in your area? If you're willing to show up when asked, you're already in the top of the food chain at a private security company...maybe look into getting your guard card to see if there are openings in the area? Even if there aren't currently, it's a very high turnover industry. You might just fit the bill for an easy long term gig if you don't want to do much or make much.

Again, in a more personal respect, not having a flexible schedule is likely the main thing holding you back. Entry level doesn't care about experience or job history. They care about availability. If you can articulate yourself clearly and can work whenever I want, you can likely have my entry level position. If you don't meet both of those criteria, you aren't likely worth the effort (at least that's my experience during my retail management days).

What do you do primarily?

Try retail stores, grocery stores, warehouses, hardware stores, and other places. Check out Craigslist job postings, too. :teeth

I'm aware of the age difference between me, probably one of the youngest on the forums, but I have good words... occasionally. :afm199

Better hold onto that job you've had since 2007 unless you want to find out about age discrimination firsthand.
