Reserving spots at race weekends

"Just go faster"
Last round at Thunderhill, I arrived late afternoon on Thursday expecting to find all sorts of open spots with power. What I found was about 1/4 (guess) of the spots with trailers in them, and 3/4 of the spots “reserved” with cones. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this process? I ended up finding a spot at turn one (which lost power for the weekend), but was a little annoyed that all the other spots were being held for people, most of which didn’t show until late Friday night or Saturday morning. I was back and forth about kicking some cones out of the way, but ended up going the nice guy route. I’ve certainly tried to hold a spot or two for fellow racers in the past, but it seems like it’s getting out of control. Thoughts?

I can see how that's annoying. That said, cones are usually there so that people can pit together so on balance I'd echo thedub here. Usually people are pretty cool about running power cables as long as there's capacity.

Hey Cone Kicker....Show up at 1:00 pm thursday take a day off from work and hang out for 4 hrs in the 100 degree heat and problem goes away. Be careful I hear some cones kick back.

Even if you show up early on a Thursday for Friday track day (we typically do) and are #2 or 3 in line, and wait for hours...it becomes a bit of a free for-all when the gates open.
I think Dave Moss was going to look into a discussion on creating a better system.
It's rare but we have coned out a space for our friends who were coming a bit later (normally we travel together) as we help one another get ready for races .
Just want to say it is fantastic that Thunder Hill has power available and I don't have to run my RV generator to stay cool!:thumbup

^^^ This exactly. Some of us burn extra vacation days, literally whatever it takes, etc to get there early and have a spot. Even then, it’s a chess match. We learned the hard way. We sit. We bake in the heat. We wait patiently. We ain’t even all that fast, yet we do what we need to for the races. You come and kick any cones I have out.....I’ll be taking that all personal. Like you think you something special and don’t need to put in the extra effort, because you will STEAL the extra effort that others put in?? So...you’re saying you’re a thief??

Dude, really? This ain’t your first rodeo. You start kicking cones, you ain’t no racer, you’re a crybaby—I don’t give a shit who you are.

Cuz your buddy took a day off work, hung out, and beat the OP to the track? Ha, sounds like he’s the lazy one and didn’t. F that.

:confused

How is the person whose spot you’re reserving putting in any extra effort? OP wouldn’t be stealing your pit spot, just the person who is piggybacking off of your early arrival.

If anything, he’s putting in MORE effort than the absent racer with cones waiting for them.

Your logic doesn’t compute to me...

Wow! Interesting way to view things. For the record, I was just asking if there was maybe a better way to do things. An open discussion, not an emotional reaction like you are clearly having. I got there Thursday afternoon, which should be plenty early. I was also working as a PTT instructor for the Friday track day, and find it even more ridiculous that I couldn’t get a spot on a day that we (PTT) had the track reserved. All the non Friday track day, get there early people, should have waited until 5 pm on Friday to enter the track.....in my opinion.

Bingo. I always come a day early to claim a space.

OMG lol. I just realized you’re a novice racer. Hahahaha. Welcome to the AFM family. You certainly have made an impression on me already.

Yep, finding a space with power has been really difficult this year and I think this is a legit issue for the AFM board to review. Hopefully this is a result of an increase of members racing.

My personal view is you shouldn't be allowed to save a spot on the Friday before an event if there is a trackday provided by one of the trackday groups. Those spots should go to whoever is at the track that day riding with, and paying, the trackday group. To be more direct, if you're at the track you get the spot.

AFM should reserve/rent the RV spots like the garages at Sears. Already have a garage czar to handle it too.

Its hard to regulate and its going to get worse. Vendor row takes up a decent amount of the power plugs. I have seen extension cords going forever to other pits. It would be cool to see the pits painted with lines and space numbers that people can reserve in advance. I arrived Friday mid-day last time at T-hill and there was no power for me. People wont pay the gate fee but will take an extra day off work for a spot with power..makes me laugh. Lets see how it goes next round.
