My ex had a 2010 TDI Jetta sedan...made it from Livermore to San Diego and still had a quarter tank left. I'm no math whiz but with a 14.5 gallon tank, and a 460 mile trip, that leaves roughly 3.5 gallons left in the tank which comes out to about 42 miles per gallon for the 11 gallons used. That's not bad at all if you ask me.

If the newer cars have a fuel gauge anything like my older 1999-2003 versions, they don't read in a linear fashion. A quarter tank shown on the dial is more like just over 1 gallon left (or about 100 miles) in my case. So maybe more like 38 MPG for the trip (14.5 gal for 560 miles)...

A long highway jaunt with the TDI should net you the higher end of the EPA estimate, if not exceed the estimate. Was the car fairly new when this trip was made? It is mentioned around the forums that a 20-30,000 mile break-in period is needed to achieve peak MPG.

Do they really get that MPG?

The EPA ratings are far lower than that and every car I've ever owned gets lower MPG than the EPA ratings say they should...

Far lower?
Are you sure you checked the TDI?
My sister was able to get better than 50 but hers is not a wagon.

Starting in 2008 the EPA revised their testing procedure by which they established MPG ratings. 2008 and later ratings are much closer to real world driving and mileages are attainable, and sometimes even surpassable under the relatively normal driving conditions.

EPA used to establish MPG at a low speed, 55 mph or maybe even 45 mph with basically no wind resistance and super gentle acceleration. The new tests are up at 60 or 65 mph and incorporate wind resistance and all sorts of more realistic stuff.

That's tight, how much did it set you back if you don't mind my asking

26,900 before my trade in of $2,500. I did Truecar.com and Dublin was the cheapest of the 3 dealers I was set up with, they best Costco's price which is supposed to be a no haggle barely above invoice. Wasn't going to go new. Saw a used '10 on CL for $20,000 with 15k miles. Now I'm new with a full warranty.
