Looking for friends to go camping with.

Hey guys, I'm 28 and I've been riding on the street for about 6 years.

I'm new to the adventure bike category and am looking to get started camping and taking off on dirt roads. I've never once ridden on dirt, so I'm not sure where to get started. Anyone else hitting the trails this summer?

Will wear a mask for peace of mind.

You can start by laying down the Tiger and try to pick it up. This is how I discovered I cannot ride off road with my Tiger :laughing

Sorry don't have much to add. Subscribing to see where all the adventure riding is going on nowadays

I agree about being able to pick up your bike if you travel alone. I have a KLR650, which I may or may not be able to pick up depending on how full the tank is (+40 lb up high when full), the terrain, and the slope. For a trip I was taking alone, I got a motowinch, practiced with it, and had to use it in the desert miles from anywhere. It's expensive, and I think there are cheaper alternatives now, but it works well and packs small.

I just went to the website to get the URL, and was surprised to see that my bike is on the first page, from having gone down in sand (with a full tank).

You could start by riding to Carnegie and doing all of the roads marked in green on the map. You shouldn't be able to get in too much trouble on those. I wouldn't hesitate to take my 790R on all of the blue trails there if I had the opportunity. I did all of them on my XR650L a few years ago.

I'm hitting the trails this summer at least once a week, but I'm no longer in California.

Let me know when you're thinking of going! Been on fire roads a handful of times with the Vstrom and only fallen twice during the first ride. I'm usually hesitant to go since I'm solo. At the moment, trying to get the Vstrom back to stock height before my next trip.

I'd be down for a trip! KLR 650... put some dates out there and we'll see if we can make it happen.

I bought my KLR last year to hopefully do some off road and camping. Have not done either yet. I would definitely like to join though if you are looking for company. I am 29, male, in Oakland.

Hey toothless!

I didn’t start motorcycle camping until I was 40, so you’re off to a great start! :thumbup

here’s a pic for oobus, HeatXfer and two wheel tramp (and WoodsChick, Cabrito and Eric B):

you could probably get your Triumph up to Anthony Peak, no problem. :ride

as someone who didn’t grow up here, how I learned to moto-camp in California was by going to two wheel tramp’s Cedarville and Weaverville Rallies and the Sheetiron ... got to meet a ton of like-minded people that way.

we should all plan an overnight at Buck Island sometime soon, and meet up with the Second Sunday Rayhouse Road guys.

The next trip I’m planning on is with the StonyBARF crew later this year. it’s a great big-ADV thing to do because there’s a bunch of fire roads near by.

enjoy the Triumph! :angel

I'm down a bit further south than you. DM me. We can help each other pick up our Tigers while the cool kids on their KTMs do the hill climbs. ;)

Any good tent camping up around there? (Bonus for water and at least pit toilets).

I'd be up for Buck Island overnighter.

Any info on this? Last thread I saw was for their run in June.

Hundreds of square miles of good tent camping in the MNF. Pit toilets in the developed campgrounds, but water is pretty rare to find around those parts.. unless you're really close to a town.

Wells Cabin is the closest campground to where that photo was taken.

+1! you kind of have to follow ADV for the Death Valley n00bs Rally and two wheel tramp’s Cedarville Rally ... :thumbup

Anthony Peak has a pit toilet and a picnic table, but no water (pack about 3 liters a day, myself, and then just look for a flat spot with a view in the Mendo NF).

I'd be up for Buck Island overnighter.

I’ve been talking about this for years, maybe we’ll finally make it happen ... :blah

I keep an eye on Dirty BARFing. think they try to do two a year, and the one I did last month was No. 13, I guess ...

I can never seem to find an actual cabin ... and is Wells Cabin different from Government Flat? :dunno

Yes, I believe Government Flat is somewhere on M4 northeast of there. I've seen road signs but it doesn't really show up on maps..

sounds like you know the area well ... :angel

I call Government Flat the little flat area (ha) below the fire tower about a mile or two, up above M4 ... I’m often confused by signs, though, thinking the sign is the area, when it is really saying “this way to” Wells Cabin or Government Flat, for example. there seems to be a campground there. is that Wells Cabin?

anyway, fun to talk about ... :ride

I've been to neither Wells nor Government camps.
Googling found THIS Wells Cabin camp web site.

Looking at it's map and moving it around (northward) I found Government Camp on the map.
I zoomed the map out to where you can see Wells Camp (lower left corner) and Government Camp (upper right corner).
(don't know if that's the same as Gvmt Flat tho)

Also never heard of Buck Island. Will need to look into that.
Doubt it's the one in the Virgin Islands... although... :teeth
edit to add... ahhh, the Rubicon Trail near Loon Lake.

A :thumbup on ADVrider for ADVriding. :cool
The DVNoobs yearly event is a great intro to Death Valley if you haven't been but would like to check it out.
