alright. thanks to this thread I re lubed my ratchets. i must admit after doing one its kinda addicting so i greased my torque wrench also. i have those powerbuilt ratchets and i couldn't take the stuff out but i just greased the hell out of it. my torque wrench didn't even have any grease on it.

For anyone who is having any problems with their "Craftsman" ratchets. keep in mind that it is a craftsman ratchet and it carries a lifetime warranty. so you can take it back and get a exchange at any Sears or Orchard Supply. But if your one of those people who carry a sentamental value with your tools. You can purchase all the internales (sp) new for your ratchet at sears for $0.01 yes one penny.

Do you have to special order the insides of the ratchet, or do they carry them in stock? I went to OSH looking for the parts, and the tool people didn't know anything about replacement parts.

no replacement parts are sold. if for some magical reason you lost/misplace a part just put it back together and return it for a new 1. the old 1 will be rebuild and sears will resale it.

i just tried this on a Allen ratchet i thought id striped out from impacting it with a bmfh.. once inside it was indentical to the craftsmen and what was left of the grease was hard and gumed the gears to the point that they sliped on eachother..after an hour in the hot tank i used a mil grade gear grease and put it back togather.. it works better then it did new.

The stores have rebuild kits in stock, but, generally they wont let you get your hands on them, however, you can exchange your ratchet for one with all new internals at the counter. I used to work for sears, the ratchets are rebuilt at the local stores. If I recall they're lubed with graphite not grease when they're reassembled there.

The expensive way...

The cheap way is to rig a 1 foot bar to the end of your torque wrench and hang a 1 pound weight from the end of of it. Hence, 1 lb-ft; that's what your wrench should read. If you need pictures of this, you need to take it to a pro...

unless your buying snap on theres alot of shit thats EXACTLY the same just with a different name....exaple, my coworker has a mac air wratchet that he paid like 150 for while another one has a harbor freight that he paid 18 for. they are exactly the same minus the name! personally i buy off the truck for the convenience and thats where they get us. its easier to spend $30 a week compared to hundreds all at once, plus my matco driver will take everything back for a full refund. and the mac driver comes ever 2 weeks, if that:laughing

unfortunately the snap on guy is an asshole so nobody goes on his truck anymore and hes only at the shop for like 20 mins.

true, but snap-on sells other peoples stuff with snap-on logos on it. central tool for one. my micrometer is made by central with a snap-on logo. god i paid a lot for that logo :cry

just take it to sears and get it replaced with a new one, that is if it is giving you trouble. nothing beats a new one.

:hand oh and get another 1 that doesn't have any grease in it. this should be done 1st thing when you get them so they feel good. obviously you don't use yours enough to "need" this service.

please note that sears has a policy of NOT handing you a new one. They 99% of the time give you a rebuilt/reman'd one. :thumbup
Also if there are signs of a cheater pipe being on your wrench, they can deny warranty work/replacement.

For fun, I'll snap a pic of the Craftsman rachet I have at work that has a grease fitting built into it.
They may still have a lifetime warranty, but there was a time they didn't expect you to ever need it.
