How To: service your craftsman vs-44808 ratchet

so this how to is for the tools instead of the bike since they rarely get any love :laughing this pictorial is for the vs-44808, but its the same for all the craftsman ratchets. you'll be amazed @ how much better the ratchet feels after this service is performed :teeth

remove the retaining circlip

just take it to sears and get it replaced with a new one, that is if it is giving you trouble. nothing beats a new one.

:hand oh and get another 1 that doesn't have any grease in it. this should be done 1st thing when you get them so they feel good. obviously you don't use yours enough to "need" this service.

lift the ratchet gear out of the ratchet

so far we've got a snap-ring, retaining washer and ratchet gear

next remove the mesh-gear. this part is what makes the ratchet click

there is a small ball bearing under the mesh gear. don't lose this part.

remove the spring that was under the ball bearing

 

[elskipador]

use contact/brake cleaner to clean all the crap off the parts

pack the ratchet body with grease. i used silkolene's RG2.

use a pick to slide the spring back into its hole.

 

[elskipador]

place the ball bearing on top of the spring. put some more grease onto the mess gear.

use the mesh-gear to push the ball bearing down and slide it back into the ractchet body.

pack more grease onto the top of the mesh-gear.

 

[elskipador]

put a little grease on the ratchet gear and slide in back into the ratchet body.

 

[elskipador]

put some more grease on top of the ratchet gear and put the retaining washer in place.
