Eldritch

is insensitive
My initial positive response was a recurring work situation wherein I applied The Eldritch Plan, “At this point for me here, you will need to be active for 4-5 years before I take you very seriously as a community member”.

I was willing to lighten up on the time but The Plan was applied to youthful novice employees.

Finishing Eldritch’s response this came to mind;
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/2399046-all-i-really-need-to-know-i-learned-in-kindergarten
I’ve not gone back, as I sometimes do, to read the thread and see what y’all were discussing because this quote is adequately pleasing in subject matter.

“I respect people who are long standing members of the community who treat each other with respect, even the ones I often do not agree with.”
As an OG respecting one’s elders can be a rare commodity but that thinking can lead to the following;

“This is because BARF promotes a community of open conversation and the emphasis is on Community. If you disagree with someone on an issue, you will be best served by not taking anything personally, focusing on the issues of discussion, and you leave any attacks on a persons identity, character, or underlying personal motivations out of it. These rules have value and have helped BARF mantain a relatively safe space for open discussion and debate over the years.”
I would hope I have this with my “community “ of personal friends as it’s a worthy goal. BARF is 87% of my social media and I place myself in the novice class because I’m still working out the online relationship thing and thought this to be a guide for that path.

11. Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some. Thank you Robert Fulghum

Thanks for diving in and giving your take. Glad we see eye to eye on how to interact. Makes me wonder if we should start a thread about what KIND of community people even want here.

Two overall thoughts, and I am sure I will piss people off:

1) I am a dick sometimes, and I readily admit it.

2) Self-appointed gatekeepers are not always the best way to create community.

When I was practicing law I would run into people saying "Muh YeArS In PrActIce," and stuff like that. It was a form of gaslighting. It had nothing to do with whether they were right or wrong, or even good people. It was just kind of like a ceremonial badge they would "wear."

I do think there is much to be learned from experience, but *time* alone does not automatically connote or denote experience, truth, goodness, common sense, or anything really.

No offense to E, but I was really getting a Cartman "ResPeCt Muh AUthOritah" vibe off them.

Also interesting how we have two different takes on your post.

I, too, am a dick sometimes. Part of the package, if anyone doesn't like it, it's just part of my personality (Thanks, Dad). I'm getting better at being less of a dick, but it's a journey, not an on/off switch.

Yeah, "gatekeepers", especially those who are NOT MODS, who try to limit dissent are acting like jerks (not saying they ARE jerks, but they're showing what jerks look & act like... :teeth) need to recognize their own behavior (or Mods need to step in & call a shovel a shovel).

Technically, the gaslighting was using the logical fallacy of appeal to authority, where that individual's vast amount of time in law somehow made their position unassailable, regardless of the facts of the matter. :thumbup

On a somewhat related note, one of my favorite aphorisms is, "I love everyone equally", meaning I love Mother Theresa and Hitler equally, along with everyone else. Truthfully, I don't love everyone equally, but anyone who hears this statement should be able to understand the point, which is about discrimination. We all discriminate, whether we admit it or not. How one likes their steak, how one likes their eggs cooked, how much we like tofu, how we consider the death penalty, our politics, it's all about discriminating or preferring one thing over another.

Preferring one thing over another is a personal choice based on experience, choices made in life, relationships with others, etc., but should not then be cause for treating those with different preferences as "other" and "enemy", as has happened here on teh BARFs.

I can't see dudes posts since he is on ignore, but since he is calling me out in your quote, I certainly hope you don't think I was doing that?

Let me know if you do?

TY!

Agreed - othering not so good. That ends with in-groups and out-groups.

Just riffing on Sartre right now. I know almost nothing about him because I don't remember what I read. I would make a good waiter.

I'm dumb in some ways, average in some ways and smart in very few ways.

I'm wondering if smart people post more, or less in general.

Aren't you one of the final filters in place to assure that somebody unfit doesn't become a police officer out there on their own?

If this person can't learn how to do simple things like that, how the heck are they going to be effective in Law Enforcement?

I know one thing, I wouldn't want somebody like that to have my back with a gun in their hand.

After 5 weeks I think I have PTSD! I am finally free. :)

That was not a fun experience. Never is with the difficult ones.
