Ask me about my B-1-D
My 20 year old son, last Christmas, signed me up for him and me to take the Alameda County Sherrif’s Office Civillian Motorcycle Beginners class together. Today was the class and also my birthday!
it was super foggy as we rolled up just before 8:00 am start, and we were the only two students there, so we were worried that the class may be cancelled as they require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class
lucky for us, 3 other students showed up, so game on
the first hour or so is lecture in a classroom, but once that was complete, we found the fog had cleared so on to the bikes!
overall it was a fun day of tight turns and braking exercises aboard the beater retired kz1000 police bikes. they pretty much all had oil leaks or other “ features”, my bike would get hot and the “exterior” oil would smoke on the hot bits.
purely cosmetic, my bike never skipped a beat
it was great sharing the day with my son, I have 38 years riding experience, he had approximately 0 hours on a brand new M1 endorsement to his license, a week old.
he did fine, dropped the bike several times as did all the others in the group.
me : 0 drops thank you very much
my biggest challenge was adjusting to the instructors paradigm of use of controls.
38 years of covering the front brake with 2 fingers is a hard habit to break
so overall, this is a valuable skill building class
one of the instructors gripes is that since there is no deposit to sign up, no-shows are an issue
if you think you might want to take this class, but are put off by the online booking selling out early... just show up on the day of class anyway, more than likely there will be room for you
thank you to my son Aaron, my newest motorcyclist, to the ACSO instructors Steve and Herb, and to the other three classmates, Sabrina, Alex, and Michael for making such a fun day!
