happy birthday to me ... at the ACSO civillian moto training class!

My 20 year old son, last Christmas, signed me up for him and me to take the Alameda County Sherrif’s Office Civillian Motorcycle Beginners class together. Today was the class and also my birthday!

it was super foggy as we rolled up just before 8:00 am start, and we were the only two students there, so we were worried that the class may be cancelled as they require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class

lucky for us, 3 other students showed up, so game on

the first hour or so is lecture in a classroom, but once that was complete, we found the fog had cleared so on to the bikes!

overall it was a fun day of tight turns and braking exercises aboard the beater retired kz1000 police bikes. they pretty much all had oil leaks or other “ features”, my bike would get hot and the “exterior” oil would smoke on the hot bits.
purely cosmetic, my bike never skipped a beat

it was great sharing the day with my son, I have 38 years riding experience, he had approximately 0 hours on a brand new M1 endorsement to his license, a week old.

he did fine, dropped the bike several times as did all the others in the group.
me : 0 drops thank you very much

my biggest challenge was adjusting to the instructors paradigm of use of controls.

38 years of covering the front brake with 2 fingers is a hard habit to break

so overall, this is a valuable skill building class

one of the instructors gripes is that since there is no deposit to sign up, no-shows are an issue

if you think you might want to take this class, but are put off by the online booking selling out early... just show up on the day of class anyway, more than likely there will be room for you

thank you to my son Aaron, my newest motorcyclist, to the ACSO instructors Steve and Herb, and to the other three classmates, Sabrina, Alex, and Michael for making such a fun day!

There isn't much better than sharing motorcycles with your responsible adult kids. I've gotten to do it with both of mine.
Nice write-up too. You put a smile on my face, Simon. :thumbup

You two almost had personal, one-on-one instruction.

What a neat gift from your son. :thumbup

Hi, a bit late to the thread, but I signed up for a class in April even though I saw it mentioned on their website that it's challenging and not for beginners. I've got about 1000 street miles (about 8-9 months of weekend riding) under my belt, so consider myself a beginner. Would you recommend I hold off until I have more experience?

Get another 1000 miles under your belt before then and I think you'll be fine. the important thing is that you're not a total noob who's way uncomfortable on a bike.

Maybe Simon will chime in but it sounds like his son took that class without any street miles..maybe he just meant no miles with the license and had a permit before that. Anyway sounds like his son did just fine.

I am also signed up for the April class. Try to put in as many miles as you can between now and then.

hi EBDan,
my son was (still is) a brand new rider with zero miles (ok he has a few more now)
you will be fine!

be sure to rent the retired kz1000p police bikes , which have good crash bars, so dropping them will not be any issue. best $50 spent

have fun, listen to the instructors well, stay hydrated, did I mention have fun? and report back here when done !

@ejv I took the class two years ago as well.

Did you take the day two class as well? The web says they have to be taken within 12 months of each other. Wondering if I should sign up for day 2. Probably have to sign up soon if I decide to do it.

Appreciate the feedback folks. I will most likely be able to get in additional miles before April since I've been riding a bit more these days. I've taken the IRC (intermediate class from Total control already) so I think I should be ok from the comments above.

I'll definitely be renting their bikes for the course :thumbup

Great! Which date in April? I'm in the April 25th class.
