$2. bills was the going price for "bed & breakfast" back in the day.

Wait until the PC Police/human trafficking, find out about that little bit of history, , ,

Cash is what I use, I go thru $20 bills like water out here, $50's are looking better, I have to load up on $1 packs,
Waitresses won't tip themselves, , ,

Banks have embraced all kinds of fees as a profit center since the Great Recession so no surprise they are ratcheting up fees for card processing. Credit cards are not a good fit for my business but I still get solicited by card processing providers. The terms are awful. I can only imagine the squeeze put on small retailers.

You may want to re-evaluate the ability to process credit cards. Pass the cost on to your customers and you will have no costs. The fee is 3%. I don't charge the fee on labor that is under $500 (pretty rare) and always charge it on parts. My invoice has the CC Fee as a line item and I have never gotten any negative feedback.
It is very convenient and is an added value to what you offer your customers.

PayPal had a grand plan to drastically lower fees over credit cars, but today it looks like they are just matching with the ~3% + ~$0.30 fee.

Does anyone know how WeChat and Alipay fees are? Payment seems much more convenient in China. Yet, the last I checked, you need a Chineese bank card to use it those.

With so many cards giving 1-2% cash back to the purchaser, plus the cost to the credit card company of providing fraud protection I doubt we will see much lower rates anytime soon.

The asymetry of the invisible to consumer charge at the merchant via higher prices against the very visible cash back tends to lead to fees staying high.

I used Square for my business, fee was the usual 2.9% but they are easy to deal with and a local company who you can actually contact and get a response if you have an issue. I wrote to them a few times about UI issues with their website and noticed fixes not too long after.

Blame the federal government. In Europe, interchange fees are limited to 0.3% for credit cards, and 0.2% for debit.

There was a pretty big antitrust settlement in 2019 on the issue, and litigation appears to rage on.

We use Square too. Can't say enough about ease of use and good customer service.

I tried to sign up for Square but it refused to verify my identity for no understandable reason. Customer service would not touch that. Then it refused to let me delete my account because my identify wasn't verified(!).

Ended up with Stripe which is trouble-free so far.
