Do you believe in saving for the future?

Most people would want to be retired at my age, and I could do that any time. However a philosophy of mine is that life is too short to spend most of your waking hours with a job you hate. So I've always done work that I enjoy.

Now I'm stuck with an ugly choice: work, or have less fun. :laughing

I'd retire tomorrow and I'm sure I wouldn't be bored. But it's looking realistic by mid to late 50s so I'm not complaining.

I hear a lot about how we should save our money, invest in the future, sacrifice while we're young so it will pay off when we're older. Makes sense.

At the same time, our future is uncertain. Disease, accidents, etc. Even if you're lucky enough to make it into old age without any issues, will you sit on your loads of cash and be happy about it, or will you look back and wish you enjoyed it more while you were young and physically capable?

Where do you find your balance?

I think your last sentence is key.

Things have worked out well for my family, but we were preparing for things to not do so well. And at some point things might not be great, but we're doing all we can to enjoy life while it's good.

I'm old enough to wonder why, people who never miss an oil change on the bike and use super premium oil, don't save for retirement. That's like. . . cat logic.
