Dakar Rally, Jan 2nd - 15th, 2021 **SPOILERS!!**

Short should not have gotten on the helicopter. That was pretty much the end of any argument he could’ve made to get his time back. Pretty surprising.

Are you suggesting I should put the pitchfork back on the wall in the garage? :laughing :twofinger

I'll be waiting for the full story and results of the investigation if any are shared. Surprised Short called it quits too... wonder if he knew?

In the interim.... I'll go back to cheering for the little triangles moving around the map on my screen. :teeth :ride

Skyler Howes, ftw!

WOOT Skyler Howes!! :flag

I agree with WoodsChick about Andrew Short giving up too soon. He must have thought about fuel contamination. I wonder if dumping fuel in the desert is against rules, and maybe he wouldn't have proof if he did that? Not sure but will be interested to learn more.

Thanks for the pics of Skyler John.

Damn impressive.

I enjoy following the triangles, but also flipping back to the previsious stage for the dudes that are on later time frames to see (or try to see) how they are doing. Still get surprised.

Stage 4 is gonna be fast so a chance for Ricky to pick up some time hopefully. Kept thinking last night... "Wonder why he is losing time?"

Must be the navigation was my conclusion, but with limited tires it could be that or it could be other things too of course.

Damn 1/2 of TV coverage is way to short :rant

would be awesome to see Mr Brabec claw back that 11 minutes ...

really felt the disappointment of Mr Short’s withdrawal last night, seeing Mr Howes doing so well ...

think the pure desert of the recent rallies favors USA riders with our desert training opportunities in the south west and Baja ... wish we had more folks to root for down the GC and in Malle Moto. maybe next year?

fun stuff ... :party

CJ kind of referred to how the FI bikes have a hard time if the injectors get full of water ... suspect they had to do a bit more in the bivouac than just add good gas to get it to fire up?

what I read very initially was he left the bike because it was “unfixable” out on the course, which I’d assumed to be a broken engine, or something, and that his team didn’t have a spare engine on a race truck the way Mr Gonçalves/Hero had last year when we saw him swap an engine on-course?

wish now he had just withdrawn, too ... : |:rose

Know-it-none
It was suggested that he wait for the support truck, see if they can fix it, keep the evidence, and ask for a refund on time lost.
Sad to see. Go Yamaha

For those of you who have been able to watch the NBCSN shows, are they worth paying for? Are they just 1/2 hour highlights?

I don't have cable and would need buy a subscription to watch them. No problem paying for it, I do for MX, Supercross and other events I like. Just unsure of the quality of the show.

Watching the little arrows race around a map on my screen and the short highlights from Dakar and Redbull are leaving me wanting more. :x

Basically the bike highlights on YouTube are the same. The show features cars, the trucks and lightweights too. It is well done, but the YouTube one's John has posted are basically the same except without some fluff and more on the American guys.

Personally I would not pay for them unless more of what you watch is part of it. They (NBCSN) has been showing MotoGP as well so there is that.
You get raceday only.

Thanks for the honest assessment Budman. :thumbup

I'll just hold off and have to be satisfied with the youtube highlights. Already see Motogp, MX, and Supercross through my subscriptions.

This see saw of leading out and losing time is KILLING me. Almost like a basketball game, and need to wait until the second half to really follow. :laughing

Andrew Short talks about what he tried, communication, and the decision to get on the helicopter on the PulpMX Show. Fast forward to about 3:31:00 into the show for the Shorty's interview.

Tonight I am going to attempt to follow along with Google Maps, satellite view, opened up in an adjoining tab to try to see some terrain as well.

STARTS HERE.

Doing so now with the Liaison section.
Can use the roads (labeled in Google) and the terrain features for bearings while zooming in and out (with Google Maps). Then jump to Dakar map and compare (they don't number the roads but show some of them).

Anybody know how to turn Long/Lat bars in Google Maps? That would help since they are shown on Dakar map.

Sound cool. Good luck with it John.

Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Seems like a later start tonight / today there.

I am getting worn out staying up late :laughing

so I eyeballed the spot where it looks like they’ll start the special stage on the Dakar map and used those coordinates in googled and got “22.000000, 43.000000” and that seems to work in google maps ...

edit: looks like you’re doing it ... :thumbup
