Bummer for Andrew Short. I wonder what happened with the bike! Sounds like a tough day for KTM as well. Looking forward to the video!

Stage 2 Bike and Quad...

thanks for the link, had not seen this yet.

"lucky he's big and strong ..." :party

have to focus all my Yamaha-rooting on Mr Van Beveren, now, I guess. :afm199

fun to see again see a Dakar where opening the course is so difficult ... :ride

Damn, that sand looks super soft and deep! Reminds me of skiing deep powder more than riding, looked like the cars were very concerned about getting stuck.
Yamaha and KTM with lots o' engine issues, but not Husky....wonder what that's about (KTM and Husky run the same motors, right?).

Great to see the racing and the terrain, aside from it being 110 degrees it looks like a really cool place to explore.

Bummer for Shorty.

Fun watching Rickey's little red triangle move up last night.
I made it to 2AM too. :teeth

Don't forget Ross Branch riding blue. He was flying yesterday! :thumbup

I find the motors and design fascinating. Amazed the power they make and the distance they go. From what I read, they are in the range of 70hp and get only one piston change for the entire rally. That's significantly more than moto and supercross teams. Reading an article with Johnny Campbell discussing the Honda, none of the parts are sourced or shared with the CRF moto bike. Its like a F1 one off. Shorter stroke engine too. Don't know about the Austrian bike or motor, but curious.

As for KTM and Husqvarna, should be same engine I would think. I wonder how much of a Chinese Wall has been erected between the two teams and how much information is shared or not.

Bummer for Short. But Brabec came roaring back! :flag Really surprised he won the prologue to lead out the 1st stage. I thought there was more strategy or cat and mouse stuff going on as leading out is such a disadvantage. :dunno

Just glad we have some racing to follow and cheer for!

speaking of Husqvarna, Mr de Soultrait was always my favorite Yamaha rider (French racer/Yamaha France and all that),
until Mr Short, this year ... still getting used to Mr Branch on the blue factory team. :laughing

Well this is interesting..... Short's issue looks to be water in his fuel tank, possibly contaminated fuel at the refuel station as reported by motosport. A couple of articles on this thus far, and not the only rider to suffer.

Interesting that Short couldn't or didn't have the tools to clear his bike of water. Pretty common for folks on offroad bikes to have to clear their systems of water. Thankfully, its heavier than fuel and can often be just drained out when settled. Myself and folks I know have all dealt with this at one point or another, albeit on carb'd bikes.

Regardless, this will be an interesting storyline to follow for the next few days.

Wow wonder how they will handle that? I cant imagine he didn't consider bad fuel. Bike is running fine, gets new fuel and then it wont start. BUMMER!!

"After the bike was returned to the Wadi Ad-Dawasir bivouac his team checked the fuel tanks and found water inside. Similar problems were reported from KTM’s Toby Price and multiple other riders.
Yamaha then poured new fuel and Short’s bike started without problems, indicating the issue was with the fuel supplied by Dakar at the re-fueling station.
The Amaury Sports Organisation is currently investigating the issue and no comments have been made at this time."

Taken down by water in the desert.

where's WoodsChick ...? :laughing:gsxrgrl

must be a massive bummer to prepare for Dakar and then watch hours drop away as you're stranded on a stage, especially when you were hoping for a good result ... be tempting to just get in the helicopter, I guess, especially if you were sure the bike was terminal. strange story, more will be revealed, I guess. :dunno

Mr Walkner talking about having to soldier on and support his teammates in this Dakar after dropping 2.5 hours struggling with his clutch ...

Stage three is happening now. Was hoping they were going to work something out for Andrew Short but that didn't happen. :(

Following along with the map thingy is awesome!!!

:wow My first reaction is that isn't a little contaminated fuel, but pure sabotage. I'm with Daniel, flabbergasted something hasn't been done for Short.

This reeks of foul play at worst, or absolute negligent incompetency of the organizers chosen fuel supplier at best. Either way FREE Shorty and put him back on a bike!

Short should not have gotten on the helicopter. That was pretty much the end of any argument he could’ve made to get his time back. Pretty surprising.

:laughing You know I'm always looking for that elusive water in the desert, but I never thought to look for it in my fuel tank!

And, yeah...I get what you're saying and I am in 100% agreement. I wasn't there, I don't know the whole story, but I was paying pretty close attention and I was surprised to see Short raise the white flag without exhausting more options :dunno

I do know that I'm not really digging the KSA time zone!
